IT08497: "BACKUP STGPOOL" NOT REPORTING FILES/BYTES UNREAD WHEN SEEING A HARDWARE/MEDIA ERROR

Error description

  • During the "Backup Stgpool" process, a hardware or media error
    can be encountered which is not severe enough to stop the
    process from running, but does not correctly report any files or
     bytes which were skipped and unread during the process.

    An example of this :

    pool COPYTAPE started as process 904.
    ANR1228I Removable volume 123456L5 is required for storage pool
    backup. (SESSION: 190674, PROCESS: 904)
    
    During the Backup Stgpool process, a hardware/media error is
    encountered :
    
    ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive DRIVE1 (/dev/rmt1)
    with volume 123456L5 (OP=READ, Error Number= 110, CC=0, KEY=03,

    Notice that 0 unreadable files/bytes are reported.
    
    Issuing a Q CONT against this volume shows, shows that a file
    was not copied successfully  :

    So a single file is not copied on this volume, because of the

    The key return code to look for is the "rc=3016"
    (GRC_INPUT_ERROR_SKIP) which actually skips the file during the
    process, but does not record this as being unread.

Local fix

  • Ensure the "Backup Stgpool" is performed to a drive which is not
     showing any hardware errors, or review if this is a true media
    error and either audit or restore the volume appropriately.
