IT06889: APPLIANCE MIGHT IMMEDIATELY RESTART WHEN DNS USES TCP AND A REQUEST TIMES OUT

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When a DNS query returns a response larger than a single UDP
packet, TCP will be used for resolution instead. If the request
times out it is possible an unexpected immediate restart will
    occur.

Problem summary

  • Affected are DataPower installations using DNS with round-robin
algorithm, connected to an incorrectly configured server. When
the DNS server response does not fit in DNS packet, DataPower
DNS client retries the query via TCP as expected. If that query
times out for any reason, the appliance might restart,
    generating a backtrace.
