IT06519: IMPROPERLY CATALOGUED CLIENT-SIDE DEDUPLICATED FILES CAN CAUSE PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION AND EXCESSIVE STORAGE POOL USAGE

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • In some cases, the IDENTIFY DUPLICATES processing does not
    properly catalog client side deduplicated files, which can
    cause all chunks to be catalogued as base chunks. This can
    create performance and excessive space issues in the target
    storage pool.

    To see if this APAR applies, run the following SELECT command
    as the database instance owner after connecting to the TSMDB1
    database-

    db2 "select digest_value, linkbfid, poolid, size, count(*) as
    count from tsmdb1.bf_bitfile_extents where linkbfid is NULL and
    digest_value=x'16E1F2786521AFCFF8A7FF1278224D29C457CAC9' and
    size=390 group by digest_value, linkbfid, poolid, size"

    and also:

    db2 "select digest_value, linkbfid, poolid, size, count(*) as
    count from tsmdb1.bf_bitfile_extents where linkbfid is NULL and
    digest_value=x'16E1F2786521AFCFF8A7FF1278224D29C457CAC9' and
    size=50026 group by digest_value, linkbfid, poolid, size"

    Any 'count' greater than 0 on either select indicates that this
    APAR applies.

Problem conclusion

  • This problem was fixed.

    The following sql can be used to determine if this problem
    exists:
    select digest_value, linkbfid, poolid, size, count(*) as count
    from tsmdb1.bf_bitfile_extents where linkbfid is NULL and
    digest_value=x'16E1F2786521AFCFF8A7FF1278224D29C457CAC9' and (
    size=390 or size=50026 ) group by digest_value, linkbfid,
    poolid, size

    A count greater than zero for a size value of 390 or 50026 is a
    match for this APAR.

    The following process can be used to fix the entries in the
    Tivoli Storage Manager server data base:

    Create a script using the following as an example:

    ERROR=0
    while [ $ERROR -eq 0 ]
    do
    db2 connect to tsmdb1
    db2 -m "update tsmdb1.bf_bitfile_extents be1 set
    be1.linkbfid=(select bfid from tsmdb1.bf_bitfile_extents be2
    where
    be2.digest_value=x'16E1F2786521AFCFF8A7FF1278224D29C457CAC9' and
    be2.size=50002 and be2.linkbfid is NULL and
    be2.poolid=be1.poolid fetch first row only), be1.size=50002
    where ( be1.srvid, be1.poolid, be1.bfid ) in ( select
    srvid,poolid,bfid from tsmdb1.bf_bitfile_extents where
    digest_value=x'16E1F2786521AFCFF8A7FF1278224D29C457CAC9' and
    (size=50026 or size=390) and linkbfid is NULL and poolid=? fetch
    first 200000 rows only )"
    ERROR=$?
    done

    In the update command above the poolid=? needs to have the
    question mark replaced with the actual pool id. The poolid is
    the third column in the output from the determination SQL above.

    The Tivoli Storage Manager server needs to be halted when
    executing this script.

    Affected platforms: AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, and Windows.
