Error description

  • If virtual volumes are configured in a manner that they loop,
meaning the source server is also the target, backups sent to
that device class cannot be restored.
For example, consider you have a server device class named
DBB_VIRTSRV and the server name is VIRT_SRV1. The 'query server
VIRT_SRV1' output shows that the 'High-Level Address' is the
same value (either TCP/IP address or UNC) that the Tivoli
Storage Manager server is running on. Running a database backup
to this device class will work successfully. Attempting to
restore that backup will cause the server processing to try
establishing a session with the target server. Since this
points back to itself, the sessions will fail. Failure errors
which can be received are ANR0334E and ANR0454E.
The intended fix for this APAR will prevent the ability to take
a database backup when the source and target server are the
    same.

Versions Affected: All Tivoli Storage Manager Server versions

    Initial Impact: Medium

    Additional Keywords: restoredb dsmserv

Local fix

  • Database backups should be created on media that does not
require the machine/server being restore to be available, i.e
    a non-server type device class.
