Error description

  • Tivoli Storage Manager server upgrade from V6 to V7 can fail
with a "The password for this instance is not recognized" error.

This error will show when the installation wizard presents the
instance to upgrade, and the instance credentials tab
automatically fills the instance owner name. The instance owner
user name field cannot be manually modified and will be
    presented in the following form:

    .\Administrator

After filling the appropriate password to verify account
credentials, installation wizard will show "The password for
this instance is not recognized" error and in the Windows
security event log following audit failure event will be
    recorded:

    Log Name: Security
    Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing
    Date: 27.12.2013 18:14:06
    Event ID: 4625
    Task Category: Logon
    Level: Information
    Keywords: Audit Failure
    User: N/A
    Computer: TSMSERVER1
    Description:
An account failed to log on.

    Subject:
     Security ID: NULL SID
     Account Name: -
     Account Domain: -
     Logon ID: 0x0

    Logon Type: 3

    Account For Which Logon Failed:
     Security ID: NULL SID
     Account Name: Administrator@.
     Account Domain:

    Failure Information:
Failure Reason: Unknown user name or bad password.
     Status: 0xc000006d
     Sub Status: 0xc0000064

The failed logon account name will have "@." appended to it, in
this case "Administrator@." and the upgrade process cannot
    continue.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
This can happen, if the DB2 instance is an ESE instance, which
has the "-0" appended to the name so the service name in this
case will be SERVER1-0. The installation wizard trims the ".\"
from the username, if it is found however in case that the DB2
instance is an ESE instance, then the ".\" is not correctly
trimmed and the instance owner user verification fails.

    TSM Versions Affected:
Tivoli Storage Manager server 7.1 on Windows platform.

    Initial Impact:
    Medium

    Additional Keywords:
TSM ESE zztsm71 upgrade instance password not recognized

Local fix

  • Either of following actions can be used to circumvent the issue:

    1) By copying the SERVER1-0 key and creating a SERVER1 key. This
will allow the wizard to progress. Once the wizard is past the
login panel, the SERVER1 key should be deleted before finishing
    the installation.

    2) By updating the OBJECTNAME in SERVER1-0 key to remove the
".\". This will work as long as the db2 service or the system is
not restarted. Either one of those actions will cause the ".\"
to be added back in. This only needs to be modified untill after
the wizard is past the login panel.

    Registry keys:
    "HKLM\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\SERVER1";
    "HKLM\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\SERVER1-0";

Whichever option is used, it must be done before the installer
is started. Once the wizard is past the login screen, the
    workaround should be reverted.
