Error description

  • Problem Description:
When restoring a drive that has been set up with junction
point(s) for NTFS mounted volume(s) from a local backupset
the restore process does not consider the junction point(s).
Instead the folder(s) under the junction point are restored
    directly into the root
of the system drive causing potentially a full condition for
    the disk.

This happens only when using client local backupset restore.
Restoring from a backupset on the Tivoli Storage Manager Server
    the problem does not occur.
The problem occurs using both graphical user interface and dsmc
    command line

    An example:

Consider you have the following structure for C:\ Drive:

    C:\Folder 1
    C:\Folder 2
    C:\Junction Point\Folder 3
    C:\Junction Point\Folder 4

When trying to restore this structure using option -local:
     dsmc restore backupset w:\backupsetname.ost c:\*.* -loc=file
    -subdir=yes -repl=all

the resulting folder structure will be:
    C:\Folder 1
    C:\Folder 2
    C:\Folder 3
    C:\Folder 4
    C:\Junc Point\

    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
All TSM Client version 6.x and 7.1

    Initial Impact:
    Medium

    Additional Keywords:
restore local backupset junction point NTFS mounted

Local fix

  • Restore from a backupset stored on the Tivoli Storage Manager
    Server.
