Error description

  • The Tivoli Storage Manager server can crash during Netezza
    client backups.

    NOTE: This issue could apply to other clients that use the
    Tivoli Storage Manager API, but has only been witnessed
    with Netezza clients to date.

    The root cause of this issue is that the client is not adhering
    to proper API protocol. Instead of returning a protocol
    violation back to the client, the server unexpectedly crashes.

    This APAR will prevent the crash and make the server return a
    protocol violation back to the offending client. This will
    likely still result in a client backup failure. To allow for
    a client backup success, the client must also be changed to
    avoid the protocol violation.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    A failing callstack similar to the following can be extracted
    from the resulting core dump:

      HashFindCopyGroup()
      pmGetBackupVersions()
      imDeactivateBackup()
      imUpdateInventory()
      imPrepareTxn()
      CollectVotes()
      tmEndX()
      EndVbTxn()
      SmNodeSession()
      HandleNodeSession()
      DoNodeGeneral()
      smExecuteSession()
      psSessionThread()
      StartThread()
      start_thread()
      clone()

    Initial Impact:
    High

    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
    All Tivoli Storage Manager server users.
