Error description

  • A timing issue between processes "backup stgpool" and
"reconcile volume" can cause orphan virtual volumes on source
    server:

    Recreation steps:
1,) A "backup stgpool" process defines a new scratch virtual
volume to its target copy server storage pool, for example:

ANR1340I Scratch volume TSMB.BFS.111111 is now defined in
         storage pool COPYREMOTE.
2.) A "reconcile volume" is started for this server copy storage
pool while the "backup stgpool" is still on going. The
reconcile finds the new archive file volume on target server
but it does not find the virtual volume on source server,
so the following messages are shown on source server:
ANR4355W RECONCILE VOLUMES: Volume TSMB.BFS.111111 not
valid, source server missing corresponding entry for
         target server.

3.) So the target archive file is deleted :
        ANR4362W RECONCILE VOLUMES: Invalid volume
TSMB.BFS.111111 deleted from server TSMB for device
         class TSMB_DEVCLASS.

That left an orphan virtual volume back on the source server.

Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics :

If another "reconcile volume" is attempted the next day, the
following messages show the orphan virtual volume is detected on
    source server and set unavailable:

ANR4356W RECONCILE VOLUMES: Volume TSMB.BFS.111111 not
valid, target server missing corresponding entry for
             source server.
        ANR4363W RECONCILE VOLUMES: Volume TSMB.BFS.111111
          access changed to Unavailable.

    Initial Impact: Medium

    Additional Keywords:
    TSM , virtvol , remote , s2s

Local fix

  • Avoid running "backup stgpool" and "reconcile volume" operations
     at the same time.
If that happen, delete the lost volume on source server ,
example : "delete volume TSMB.BFS.111111 discardd=yes" the lost
data will be saved again at next "backup stgpool".
