Troubleshooting
Problem
Some IBM POWER 7+ sever models do not support assigning native (i.e. physical) IO to IBM i 6.1.1 unless a vet code is purchased to allow the function. This document describes how to check the vet code enablement.
Resolving The Problem
On some POWER 7+ models, feature code EB34 can be purchased to enable running IBM i 6.1.1 on native (physical) IO. Models that support this feature are listed below:
Model | Supports vet code enablement |
Power 770/780 9117-MMD/MHD | FC #EB34 added in Hardware Announcement A13-0023 2/2013 |
Power 710/720/730/740 Express 9231-E1D, 9231-E1D, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6D | FC #EB34 |
Power 750/760 | *Not supported |
VET code enablement can be confirmed in Advanced System Management (ASM).
1. Log into ASM as admin:
On HMC-managed servers, select the server, and click Operations > Launch Advanced System Manager. Click OK.
On stand-alone servers (servers without an HMC), you should refer to the following URL: http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/topic/p7hby/areaaconnectpc.htm
2. Click On Demand Utilities > CoD Command
3. Enter the command cfcuod -query inativeio and click Continue:
4. Verify the inativeio setting:
o A value of ON indicates the VET code for running IBM i 6.1.1 native IO is enabled.
o A value of OFF indicates that IBM i 6.1.1 can only be run with restrictedIO enabled.
o An error of Unrecognized command indicates the server or server firmware level does not support this feature.
HMC Managed Servers
With HMC V7R7.6 and later, the user can successfully enter a VET code to enable IBM i 6.1.1 native support on P7+ servers. When the user enters the VET code, they will see the following message on the HMC:
The CoD advanced function activation code has been accepted by the managed system.
Note: The VET code is not displayed as a capability under the server properties (GUI or CLI).
On HMC-managed servers, the VET code can be viewed in the VET code history. The VET history log will show:
CoD advanced function activation code entered, resource ID: CA1F, capabilities: 0001.
To view the history log using the command line interface, enter the following command:
lsvet -m managed-system -t hist
where managed-system is the name of the managed system for which information is to be listed. The name may either be the user-defined name for the managed system, or be in the form tttt-mmm*ssssssss, where tttt is the machine type, mmm is the model, and ssssssss is the serial number of the managed system.
To view the history log in the GUI, select the server and select Capacity on Demand (CoD)> PowerVM > View History Log:
Note: ASM currently does not show the IBM i native IO capability bit (bit 15) under VET Capability Settings. The CoD command interface must be used as described above.
