Tape Library Resource Status Tool

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document explains how to determine what system is using a resource in a tape library when all systems sharing the tape resource are in a BRMS network.

Resolving The Problem

This document explains how to determine what system is using a resource in a tape library when all systems sharing the tape resource are in a BRMS network.

Do you ever want to find out who is using a resource in a tape library that you need?

This tool will produce a report that displays the users of the resources in a tape library for all systems in a BRMS network that share that library. The tool is also available on earlier release with the following PTFS:

o SI24433 for V5R4
o SI24427 for V5R3

To locate the tape library resource status for a specific system, issue the following command:
QSYS/CALL QBRM/Q1AOLD PARM('DEVUSESTS ' 'SYSTEM1 SYSTEM2')

Note: The second parameter can specify multiple systems, restricted only by the parameter length of 200 characters.

To locate the tape library resource status for all systems in the BRMS network, issue the following command:
QSYS/CALL QBRM/Q1AOLD PARM('DEVUSESTS ' '*NETGRP')

Both of the commands will generate an output file, QTEMP/DEVICELOG, and a printer report, QP1ADEVUSE.

Requirements

1. In order to get status from a particular system, the BRMS Network Feature, 57xxBR1 Option 1, needs to be installed.
2. All characters in the PARM field need to be in capitals (CAPs).
3. In order to get status from a particular system, that system must have the appropriate PTF applied and must be in the BRMS network.

This report shows that system SYSA has allocated tape resource T3573L4 in tape library ML3573L4. SYSB currently has a job running on tape device TAPVRT01.

When message BRM1033, Devices needed by control group not available. (C R), or CPD8F91 RC0206 is logged, this report can be a useful tool to help determine which system(s) have the tape resource(s) allocated.
  • - Example of when this report may be useful

On SYSB, the BRMS backup halted with BRM1033, the command WRKMLBSTS was issued, and it shows tape resource T3573L4 has an allocation of unprotected. This looks good.

           T3573L4       OPERATIONAL            UNPROTECTED

When trying to allocate tape resource T3573L4 on system SYSB using Option 4=Allocate resource, message CPD8F91 is logged because the resource is allocated on another system.
CPD8F91: Status of drive resource T3573L4 not changed. Reason code is 0206.
-- 0206 The drive is assigned to another system.

Using the sample QP1ADEVUSE report, SYSA has tape resource T3573L4 allocated. To be able to use T3573L4 on SYSB, you should log onto system SYSA and select Option 5=Allocate unprotected next to tape resource T3573L4. Then on SYSB, respond to BRM1033 with an R to retry and allow the BRMS backup to continue.
