MA48101 - IPL-SRCC6003962-WAIT Hang with R730 TR7 or R740 TR1

 APAR (Authorized Program Analysis Report)

Abstract

IPL-SRCC6003962-WAIT Hang with R730 TR7 or R740 TR1

Error Description

When installing MF99207 TR7 on IBM i 7.3 or MF99301 TR1 on
IBM i 7.4 on a non-HMC managed partition, the IPL hangs
indefintely at SRCC6003962.

Problem Summary

In an environment WITHOUT a Hardware Management Console (HMC),
client IBM i partitions will not IPL on code levels 7.3 TR7
(MF99207) or 7.4 TR1 (MF99301).  IPLs will hang at SRCC6003962.
This environment includes Virtual Partition Manager (DST option
11 - Work with system partitions) and Integrated Virtualization
Manager.

This problem does NOT affect hosting IBM i partitions or
single-partition (Manufacturing Default Configuration)
environments, or any HMC managed system/partitions.  It also
does not affect Linux or AIX client partitions.

Problem Conclusion

The IPL flow gets stuck in a loop searching for partition buses.
That loop has been fixed.

Note that this PTF cannot simply be applied after applying 7.3
TR7 (MF99207). That would require a permanent apply of TR PTF
MF99207, which will not work due to the IPL hang. Instead, the
client partitions must be slip installed with resave R730-RSJ.
Desired PTFs not in that resave will have to be reapplied after
the slip install. Likewise, since resave R730-RSH contains
MF99207, customers wishing to install that resave must install
R730-RSJ instead.

If 7.4 TR1 (MF99301) has been temporarily applied, this fix can
then be applied while running on the A side. Since resave
R740-RSB contains MF99301, customers wishing to install that
resave must install R740-RSC instead. This fix should be
permanently applied to avoid failures on the A side.

If the hosting partition is at the same release/level as a
client partition, this PTF can be permanently applied to the
hosting partition first. Then, on a manual mode IPL, the Save
Licensed Internal Code function (option 5 on the initial screen)
can be used to save the code image with all desired PTFs. That
image can then be used to slip install client partitions to the
desired code level.
