Error description

  • When using a multibyte locale such as ja_JP.UTF-8 that
    its name has more than 5 characters ksh output
    strings get garbled
    
    example:
    # cat test.sh
    #!/usr/bin/ksh
    val=  some string encoded by UTF-8
    
    LANG=C
    
    LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
    echo $val
    #
    
    
    To set ja_JP.UTF-8 locale on current shell
    
    # /usr/bin/ksh
    # export LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8    # (a)
    
    
    # ./test.sh                  # (b)
             %?  ??        ??    <=== HERE
    

Local fix

Problem summary

  • ksh output strings get garbled when use locale names having
    more than 5 characters in length.
    

Problem conclusion

  • Ensured that ksh works well with all the locales.
