Error description

  • In AIX 6.1 TL8, 7.1 TL2, and above, varyonvg may fail
with the following message, even though the volume group
is varied off on all nodes:

0516-1972 varyonvg: The volume group is varied on in
    other
node in concurrent mode; you cannot vary on the volume
group in non-concurrent mode. Use -O flag to force
varyon the volume group if needed.

This can happen for concurrent VGs if the last varyoff is
    from a passive-mode VG.

Local fix

  • Use varyonvg -O after checking that the volume group is
    not
    varied on at any node.

Problem conclusion

  • Modify behavior of LVM so that when going offline, or going
from active to passive mode, when LVM checks all nodes in the
cluster to see if any node is left online, it will ignore
nodes that are online in passive-only mode.

So when the last active mode node in the cluster is varied
off (or brought to passive-only mode), it will clear the
varied on state from the disk.
