Error description

  • chvg -g can fail for small/big VG if a factor change is
    required.
This can only happen if the VG already has an increased
factor value, and chvg -g finds it needs to increase it
    even more.
In that case, it may fail with:

    -> chvg -g vg00
0516-1381 chvg: Not enough descriptor area
space left in this volume group to re-size the physical
    volumes.
0516-1786 chvg: Convert the volume group to a scalable
    volume group with
the chvg -G command, then retry.
0516-732 chvg: Unable to change volume group

Local fix

Problem summary

  • For small and big VGs (default MAXPVS of 32 / 128), if MAXPVS
is non-default value already, and disks are grown, chvg -g may
fail to grow the VG. This can happen due to an incorrect
calculation of the new MAXPVS after factor change.
    .
The faulty code uses current factor instead of default factor
when calculating new factor, and based on that bad number, may
fail a check thinking that it's impossible to increase factor
to a large enough value to handle the new disk size when in
fact it is possible to do so.

Problem conclusion

  • Correct logic error in chvg code
