Error description

  • When NTP configured with server name and restrict flag (
noquery , nomodify ) on loop back IP as below . Then NTP
    fail to sync with server.

    Ex : vi /etc/ntp.conf

    restrict default noquery nomodify
    restrict 127.0.0.1 noquery
server <servername instead of IP >

Local fix

  • No Local Fix available.

Problem summary

  • xntpd fails to synchronize with the server if restrict
flag is used on loopback ip with noquery and server hostname
is used instead of ip address.

Problem conclusion

  • Have fixed the xntpd code so that now it does not fork a
child process to resolve the server hostname.

Temporary fix
