Error description

  • In man page of ifconfig, there is no such restriction
    documented
    in the order of paramters, but deleting alias IP address
    behaves differently how paramters are ordered. APAR
    IV21533
    does not completely fix this issue.

    The problem is that the first IP address is being delete
    when
    'alias delete' paramters are placed at the end. For
    example,

    # ifconfig en0 10.10.10.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 alias
    delete

    However, the specified alias IP address is correctly
    removed
    when alias delete is followed by IP address;

    # ifconfig en0 alias delete 10.10.10.1 netmask
    255.255.255.0

    Also, if "delete alias" is given at the end, no IP is
    deleted
    at all;

    # ifconfig en0 10.10.10.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 delete
    alias

Local fix

  • Do not use "alias delete" parameter at the end of
    ifconfig
    command, rather put it before IP address parameter.

Problem summary

  • ifconfig command deletes first IP address when 'alias delete'
    parameters are placed at the end. For example,
    # ifconfig en0 10.10.10.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 alias delete

Problem conclusion

  • ifconfig code is modified to delete the IP address that is
    passed irrespective of the order of 'alias' and 'delete'
    keywords.
