IV50100: LD FAILS WITH LD:FCHMOD() NOT OWNER APPLIES TO AIX 6100-09

APAR status

Error description

  • ld fails with ld:fchmod() Not owner
    
    cc -o sleepme sleepme.c
    ld: 0711-856 ERROR: Cannot set the mode of the output
    file: sleepme
            ld:fchmod() Not owner
    
    One can see following error in truss output:-
    
    1753146: 3641589: fchmod(7, 0775)   Err#1  EPERM  <<<
    fails here
    
    where EPERM from fchmod means;
    
    The effective user ID does not match the owner of the
    file, and the
    process does not have appropriate privileges.
    
    This problem can be seen on Aix machines running with
    Aix 5.3 TL11 or up
    Aix 6.1 TL04 or up
    

Local fix

  • Remove the executable created by user1 before attempting
    to rebuild the executbale by user2
    

Problem summary

  • If an output file is writable but owned by another user,
    the link fail with an error as fchmod() not owner.
    

Problem conclusion

  • To ignore the fchmod() errors other than the following cases.
    1) No execute mode bits are currently set, and
    2) Execute mode bits are needed.
