APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Starting in AIX 7.1.5.0 and 7.2.2.0 (RSCT 3.2.3.0), the
cthags subsystem can fail and exit as a result of an
underlying failure to successfully query the interface
states from the CAA layer of AIX.

When this failure occurs, a GS_TS_RETCODE_ER error will
be logged in the errpt, with a diagnostic explanation
similar to "hats connection has a problem with
    hb_errno = 1"
Because cthags is a critical subsystem for PowerHA
functionality, such a failure will cause the node to
be shut down to protect resource (data) integrity.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • In RSCT 3.2.3.0 and higher, Group Services (cthags) can suffer
a failure and exit due to an underlying interface state query
to the CAA layer in AIX. A failure of this subsystem cannot
be tolerated by PowerHA or VIOS SSP, and will result in a
node failure in either cluster type.

Problem conclusion

  • With this fix, cthags will register that the error occurred,
but will adapt to the situation and keep running.
