How To
Summary
Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux offer an optional installation scenario that does not include various libraries that are required to run the installers or use various tools in GUI mode; for example, the Configuration Managers and FileNet Deployment Manager. This Technical Notice describes the additional steps needed to enable the GUIs.
Steps
The gtk2, gtk3, libXtst, and xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 packages are required to run the following installers in GUI mode:
- Content Platform Engine
- Content Search Services
- IBM Content Navigator
- Content Management Interoperability Services
The packages are also required for running other GUI tools such as the Configuration Managers and the FileNet Deployment Manager.
Note: In the FileNet 5.5.12 release, the Configuration Manager is no longer Eclipse-based. Refer to the following technote for information on the prerequisites for using the swing-based Configuration Manager: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7090365
To use the GUI tools and installers
- Ensure that each server running on Linux, or Linux on System z, uses the X Window System, is configured for x11 forwarding, or uses some similar technology that provides the same functionality.
- Install an X Window terminal emulator on any remote machines that will be used to access tools running on the servers.
- Once the servers and remote machines are configured, use a sample x11 application, such as xclock to verify your set-up before launching any of the GUI tools.
- Then, install the required libraries as documented in the remainder of this technote.
Install the required libraries on Red Hat Linux servers
- Use the following command to install the required libraries:
yum install gtk2 gtk3 libXtst xorg-x11-fonts-Type1
- Ensure the 64-bit versions of the adwaita theme libraries are installed by using the architecture setting appropriate for your environment. For example, on an Intel-based machine, use the following command:
yum install adwaita*theme*
Install the required libraries on SUSE Linux servers
- Download these packages gtk2 gtk3
- Use zypper install <package> to install the required libraries
Recommendations
To improve the experience while using the Eclipse-based GUI tools
- For SUSE releases before 12sp3, see information on a recommended update for improved gtk3 support: https://www.suse.com/support/update/announcement/2017/suse-ru-20170645-1/
- For all Linux platforms, instability of the Eclipse-based GUI can sometimes be avoided by directing the Eclipse to use the gtk2 libraries only. Issue this export statement in the session before launching an Eclipse-based GUI tool
export SWT_GTK3=0
