Error description
FPA Build Index function currently scans DEDB areas and builds secondary index databases in a single job step. This enhancement provides scan mode and load mode for the Build Index function. The scan mode scans DEDB areas and generates pointer segment data to files in a job. The load mode reads the pointer segment data from the files and builds secondary index databases in a job. Also, the FPA Build Index function and Online Resync function currently scans a DEDB area even though it is empty. With this enhancement, the FPA Build Index function and the Online Resync function will skip the scan for the empty area. This enhancement is implemented as a result of RFE ID 65241 and 65242.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of HPFPU Fast Path Advanced Tool * * in Fast Path Solution Pack Version 1 Release * * 3 (FMID: HAHQ130). * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: 1. FPA Build Index function supports * * scan mode and load mode to be able to * * divide scan process and load process * * into separate job steps. * * * * 2. FPA Build Index function and Online * * Resync function skip scan processing * * for empty areas to improve the * * performance. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the maintenance for this APAR. * **************************************************************** 1. FPA Build Index function (INDEXBLD command with IDXPROC=BUILD keyword) adds support the scan mode and the load mode. By this enhancement, following three modes can be used. - Scan load mode: Scans the DEDB areas and builds secondary index databases in one job step. - Scan mode: Scans the DEDB areas and then generates Build Pointer Segment records. The generated records will be used in a Build Index job that runs in load mode to build the secondary indexes. - Load mode: Reads the Build Pointer Segment records that were generated in a Build Index job that run in scan mode, and then loads index pointer segments into the secondary index databases. Use the BUILDMODE keyword to specify the mode for building secondary index databases. - Scan load mode: BUILDMODE=SCANLOAD (default) - Scan mode: BUILDMODE=SCAN - Load mode: BUILDMODE=LOAD To specify the Build Pointer Segment data sets, you must either specify the data sets by providing the DD statements (S0nnnnn0 DD) or following utility control statements. - BUILDDSNMASK keyword - BLDMFILECTL subcommand The SORT keyword can be specified for the Build Index function. Use the SORT keyword to sort the records in the Build Pointer Segment record data sets within the load mode of the Build Index job. - SORT=NO: Do not sort the records in the Build Pointer Segment record data sets. Specify SORT=NO only when records are already sorted. - SORT=YES: Sort the records in the Build Pointer Segment record data sets. 2. FPA Build Index function and Online Resync function show the empty flag (DMACEMPT) that is introduced in PM79037/UI17364 (IMS V12), PI07904/UI18024 (IMS V13) before scanning the DEDB areas. If the empty flag is on, the Build Index function and the Online Resync function skip scanning the DEDB area. This will improve the performance when a DEDB has empty areas and the Build Index function builds the secondary index databases from the DEDB areas. This enhancement is being implemented as a result of RFE ID 65241 and 65242. This APAR also reconsiders calculating the size of intermediate data sets that the Build Index function allocates dynamically during the Build Index process. This prevents the Build Index job from the abend SB37 when the Build Index function builds the partitioned indexes and index pointer segments are concentrated on one partition.
