Product overview

The BladeCenter and JS20 blade offerings match extremely high-density design points with high-performance, advanced server functions. These amazingly dense products can double the processing power within a 7 U rack space over 1 U thin servers while providing rich systems management and control.

The BladeCenter and JS20 blade are matched to large enterprise customers, application service providers, and scientific and technical computing customers. They provide an attractive solution with potential cost savings where large numbers of rack-installed servers are needed in space constrained environments to handle typical enterprise and Internet applications such as:

  • Computation intensive, transaction processing
  • Server consolidation
  • Internet or intranet serving
  • Web commerce serving

The BladeCenter supports installation of up to 14 hot-swap BladeCenter JS20 blades within 7 U of rack space. Each JS20 blade contains two PowerPC 970 processors for a total of 28 processors for each BladeCenter. Redundant components round out the system to provide the high-availability levels needed for today's enterprise server applications.

Increase the flexibility of your high-density BladeCenter with IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 blade servers with PowerPC 970 (PPC 970) 1.6GHz processors. This new offering includes two standard 1.6GHz processors with a standard 800MHz front-side bus (FSB). Install these blades in a new BladeCenter or upgrade an existing BladeCenter installation. The JS20 blade server, in a BladeCenter chassis, offers advanced application serving with performance, density, and scalability. At your command are two powerful PPC 970 processors, high-speed memory, dual Gigabit Ethernet connections, comprehensive high-availability and systems-management features. The PPC 970 processor is derived from the POWER4 technology. The PPC 970 enhances the POWER4 instruction set with 162 Single Instruction/Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions that allow many processing elements to perform the same operations on different data in parallel. This SIMD capability increases the performance of the JS20 blade server for many computer-intensive applications. Enhanced performance is in conjunction with the new economic approach to the deployment of large numbers of powerful servers that require less space and power resources inherent in the BladeCenter chassis.

The IBM eServer BladeCenter chassis and IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 blade servers are the key components to building your blade configuration. Optionally available Ethernet and Fibre Channel switches support advanced configurations.

Limitations and considerations

  • The JS20 blade blades contain four DIMM sockets. A maximum of 4 GB of system memory is supported by adding a 1GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM DIMM in each of the 4 DIMM sockets. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access. The JS20 blade supports currently available 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB DIMM base system memory and options. Supported DIMMs can coexist in the same server; however, memory DIMMs of the same capacity must be installed 3 in matched pairs.
  • The BladeCenter (8677-1XX / 8677-2XX) supports a mix of JS20 and HS20 blades.
  • A Keyboard/video/mouse is not supported on the JS20. The console select button is also not supported on the JS20 blade.
  • The second IDE connector supporting an IDE HDD cannot be used when a HS20 Fibre Expansion card or BladeCenter Gigabit Ethernet Expansion Card is installed due to mechanical reasons.
  • Two 1800-watt power modules are in the 8677-2XX BladeCenter. There is support for two optional 1800-watt power modules for redundancy and robust configurations. Processor Blades 1 to 6 receive their power from power modules 1 and 2. Processor Blades 7 to 14 receive their power from power modules 3 and 4. If a JS20 blade is being installed in the 8677-1XX Blade Center part number 59P6598 titled "IBM eServer BladeCenter Power Module Upgrade Guidelines" will contain a table identifying the power load factor of all possible blades.
