BinHexS S.r.l. is an Italian IT services provider based near Milan. Founded in 2006 and with a staff of 26, the company offers hosting and housing services to the IT environments of luxury Italian fashion brands and has recently started to deliver private cloud services.

The company’s aim is to support its very demanding client base with services such as disaster recovery, helpdesk and business continuity, in order for them to benefit from a resilient and reliable infrastructure. The ultimate objective is to enable clients to deliver a faultless shopping experience to their high-end luxury brand customers.

In order to handle mission-critical operations for world-famous fashion names, BinHexS needs to rely on a system that is highly available, scalable and easy to manage, and that can seamlessly integrate with its clients’ different platforms and numerous servers.

Claudio Rizzo, IT Marketing Manager at BinHexS, comments, “We manage the core operations of our customers: from financial transactions at shops to the issue of receipts and the transportation of goods. We must always be ready to support our clients and intervene in case of problems on a 24/7 basis.

“Luxury stores handle financial transactions that can be worth thousands of Euros: imagine if, at the moment of processing a credit card payment, the system suffered a failure, even a minor one. Customers of these high-end luxury goods do not accept even the tiniest delay, and of course do not complain about BinHexS’s services but criticize the brand or store itself.”

To meet the demands of the luxury brand retailers, BinHexS establishes a strict set of service level agreements (SLAs) for each of its clients. However, ensuring full compliance with these SLAs was becoming costly and increasingly complex for BinHexS. Because BinHexS houses, maintains and operates customer equipment, the company is responsible for multiple operating systems, applications and servers, with the result that it needed to hire specialist IT administrators for each platform.

“We simply could not sustain the expense of the systems management. We started to look at cloud-ready technologies as a way of simplifying the IT environment. We wanted to continue to provide great services without the cost and complexity of the existing systems,” states Claudio Rizzo.

Finding an integrated and cost-effective solution
BinHexS decided to turn to IBM to implement a solution which was tailored to its requirements. After assessing the key issues that the new system had to address – high scalability, ease of use and cost-effectiveness – the company chose to deploy the IBM PureFlex System.

The PureFlex System features integrated servers, storage, networking, systems management and cloud capabilities all managed by the IBM Flex System Manager™ that functions as a single point of control. BinHexS chose to deploy IBM Flex System™ p24L and p460 compute nodes, based on IBM POWER® architecture technologies and optimized for Linux. By selecting the IBM PureFlex System, BinHexS has the option to implement Intel-based compute nodes in the future, slotting seamlessly within the same chassis to eliminate the cost and effort related with managing them separately.

Combining advanced IBM hardware and software, the PureFlex System offers built-in expertise with automated management and deployment of both physical and virtual resources. The solution is optimized for scalable cloud deployments, and ensures high reliability and resiliency to support critical applications and cloud services.

“Regardless of our clients’ operating system, this IBM solution allows us to support their applications in an easy and centralized way, while keeping management costs low,” continues Claudio Rizzo.

Optimizing resources
Thanks to the IBM PureFlex System solution, BinHexS can now meet its clients’ SLAs without worrying about infrastructure complexity or additional costs, and provide prompt and efficient assistance even in the unlikely case of a severe system failure.

By centralizing all operations on to a single, standardized point of control, the company has managed to reduce the number of resources required to support continuous data center operations – and the related costs – by 66 percent.

Claudio Rizzo explains, “The economic savings we get from choosing IBM are matched by the most striking features of this solution: extreme ease of management, huge scalability, and massively increased performance.”

If a service outage occurs, rather than investigate a multitude of different servers, storage and networking equipment, BinHexS is able to focus on the integrated PureFlex System from the single, central management console. With faster issue resolution, BinHexS is able to save a considerable amount of time and effort, which can be allotted to more valuable activities – such as designing and developing cloud services to attract a wider customer base.

“Our new offer of cloud services, enabled by the IBM solution, strongly differentiates us from the majority of IT providers, which generally deliver basic and limited hosting services,” states Claudio Rizzo. “In a fast-paced industry like ours, reaching the market quickly is a top priority. The ease of management offered by IBM PureFlex System enables us to launch new services and solutions very rapidly, before our competitors, and has drastically reduced time-to-market by 50 percent.”

Claudio Rizzo concludes: “IBM PureFlex System has really brought about a revolution for our business, and we could not be more satisfied with the choice we have made.”
