Serving customer needs
The challenge for Imtech ICT is to grow the number of managed services accounts in its customer portfolio and at the same time, enhance the capacity, flexibility and scalability of its offerings without increasing operational costs or adding unnecessary complexity.

Imtech ICT’s Managing Director, James Morgan, explains, “Imtech has an expert team of professionals in this field who ensure our customers’ systems, software and security are fully operational at all times. However, our existing infrastructure was threatening to restrict our growth, as it was unable to deliver the scalability and flexibility we needed. A comprehensive re-alignment of our ICT strategy was required.”

Chris Benson, Managed Services Business Manager at Imtech ICT, continues, “After discussions around the needs of our customers today and their potential needs of tomorrow; which could be anything from leveraging niche cloud services to the challenges of ‘Big Data’ and maintaining legacy servers – we quickly realized we could make it easier if they could purchase managed services independently and not just as a result of a technology investment.”

Gaining headroom for growth
Imtech ICT knew that introducing servers from multiple vendors to support the wide variety of operating systems used by its customers would add to its own data center complexity, administration and costs. The company’s data center was close to reaching physical capacity, even where virtualization had been deployed.

Lee Rossano, General Manager of Imtech ICT’s Managed Services team, says, “Underpinning Imtech’s offerings with IBM PureFlex System provides a true differentiator – it is the ideal platform to extend flexible, agile, and diverse compute services to businesses that have growing ICT demands but may not have the resources or budgets to be able to meet them.”

IBM PureFlex System provides the ability for Imtech ICT to run all the principal operating systems, including IBM i, IBM AIX®, Linux and Microsoft Windows without complex interfaces and with almost no latency between systems – as all of the associated technologies are housed within the same chassis. The solution also makes it possible to manage heterogeneous environments running multiple operating systems from a ‘single pane of glass’.

Chris Benson comments, “Many of Imtech’s customers run databases on IBM Power Systems™ servers running either IBM i or IBM AIX, with local applications in Windows or Linux/VMware environments. Customers have invested time, money and resources in these solutions, and it is often very resource-draining, costly and risky for them to migrate to a standard platform. With IBM PureFlex, we can manage the applications on whatever platform is required, eliminating the costs and reducing the business risk. If a decision is made to migrate to another platform, this can be completed within the IBM PureFlex System environment, cost-effectively and at minimal risk.”

New services on tap
Imtech ICT has not only transformed its data center, but also broadened its potential service offerings and greatly increased its business flexibility. Thanks to the management and virtualization capabilities of IBM PureFlex System, if a new market demand arises, the team at Imtech ICT can deliver new offerings extremely quickly, as deployment within the system framework is highly efficient and easier to configure.

James Morgan comments, “The development of a suite of new managed services is a natural progression for a customer-focused organization such as ours. Having a robust and highly available infrastructure ‘on tap’ with IBM PureFlex System enables us to create services seamlessly for customers, and in a fraction of the time and cost of a conventional infrastructure.”

IBM PureFlex System has given Imtech ICT the scope to move away from hosting a ‘per rack’ model into providing multi-tenanted services inside a single rack. This creates greater economies of scale, as customers need only pay for the operational costs involved in hosting their systems, with minimal hardware investment required at the back-end and with no capital expenditure.

“IBM PureFlex offers a step on from what you might call ‘traditional conversations’ about virtualization,” says Lee Rossano. “On a single chassis we will be able to roll out many more options, with potentially thousands of environments on each. We are excited about bringing to market a new set of differentiated solution offerings that will make a tangible improvement to how our customers do business.”

James Morgan adds, “IBM PureFlex System also contributes to our long-standing commitment to provide customers with access to greener technology solutions and reduce our own energy consumption.”

IBM PureFlex System has proved to be an enabler of business transformation for Imtech ICT, as Chris Benson explains, “With IBM PureFlex System, we can now position our business in a way that differs from our competitors by going beyond a physical server farm or per-server virtualization model."
