BookingShow is an Italian company affiliated with Gruppo Idea, which specializes in ticketing and the management of presales channels for shows and events. Founded in 2004, BookingShow is headquartered in Foggia, southern Italy, employs 20 people and reports annual revenues of more than €1 million.

Matteo Buonfiglio, IT System Analyst at BookingShow, explains, “The company’s main focus is on Italian music and sports: we manage large volumes of tickets for concerts and festivals, as well as football and basketball games.”

Building a strong reputation in the e-commerce field
Sports and music are of great interest among the Italian population, and buying tickets online is becoming increasingly common, with an ever-growing number of people using their computers or mobile devices to purchase tickets before events sell out. BookingShow was starting to face strong competition from other ticketing companies present on the web, and knew it had to outperform customer expectations if it wanted to stay ahead of its competitors.

In the e-commerce field, reliability and availability are critical concerns, especially during peak times when user demand soars. The summer period, for instance, is crucial as many music festivals take place from June to September, whereas the autumn to spring time is very busy due to the ‘Serie A’ football championship.

Matteo Buonfiglio states, “We serve more than 200 companies – including retailers who we support through our sales channel – and have a fast-rising number of customers. If we want to keep expanding our customer base and become more competitive in this tough market, we need to strengthen our reputation as a reliable and trusted provider of online services. This means guaranteeing to both retailers and individual buyers that they will always be able to finalize their purchase in a fast and secure way, even when many people are connected and performing the same type of transaction.”

Online ticketing companies need to comply with a series of rules established and described by the Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori, SIAE (Italian Association of Authors and Editors), and are constantly monitored by the Agenzia delle Entrate, a public institution that manages and controls all sorts of incomes and taxes. For these legal reasons, therefore, BookingShow needs to continually protect the data stored in its e-ticketing database, and ensure that the information can be quickly restored if there is a failure in the online system, in order for it to be available for legal and financial controls.

Renewing the IT environment
Faced with these business requirements, the company took the opportunity to renew its IT environment. Matteo Buonfiglio comments: “Our existing IT infrastructure – a cluster of SCSI disks – did not fully meet our expectations for business continuity and disaster recovery. We wanted to be able to guarantee that transaction data was secure in the event of a failure, so as to avoid any negative impact on our customer service or any loss of sales.”

In fact, if a system had gone down, it would not have been possible for BookingShow to keep providing a rapid and efficient service, nor to monitor access to sports events correctly. This would have led to an inevitable negative impact on BookingShow, as it would imply non-compliance with the Service Level Agreements that the company had pre-established with its clients.

With these objectives in mind, the company turned to IBM Business Partner H.S. Systems, who proposed an IBM solution based on IBM System x and IBM System Storage technology, with IBM Tivoli software.

H.S. Systems fully managed the implementation of three IBM System x3650 class servers running VMware virtualization technology. This solution enables BookingShow to guarantee highly reliable IT services, even during periods of strong variability in resource workload. The company also deployed an IBM System Storage DS3200 device, which provides a highly efficient storage environment for the company’s data.

In addition, BookingShow implemented IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack software, a data protection and recovery solution which continuously captures data changes and eliminates traditional backup windows, ensuring the smooth performance of the company’s mission-critical ticketing applications.

BookingShow has also engaged IBM Global Technology Services® under a three-year maintenance agreement for all new hardware and software with integrated 24/7 support.

Meeting customer needs
With its new, highly-virtualized hardware infrastructure, BookingShow has gained the flexibility and availability it needs to support the smooth running of its e-commerce applications. Thanks to VMware virtualization, the company has streamlined the management of its IT infrastructure and automated the allocation of hardware resources, enabling additional processor and memory capacity to be assigned to applications as needed, without downtime or disruption.

“Thanks to the IBM hardware and software solutions and VMware virtualization technologies, we have significantly improved the performance of our online operations even at peak times, and can fully recover all transactional data if a crash occurs,” states Matteo Buonfiglio.

Using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Fastback software has helped BookingShow to eliminate traditional backup windows – which were previously scheduled to run every eight hours – ensuring that data is backed up without interrupting business operations. This also allows the company to reduce recovery times and retrieve data in a quicker and easier fashion. Databases and applications are now backed up continuously, enabling the company to meet its recovery point objective: in the event of a crash, BookingShow will be able to restore all its systems to the exact state they were in one second before the problem occurred.

Matteo Buonfiglio concludes, “IBM and its Business Partner H.S. Systems have provided us with an integrated solution which supports us in building a stronger reputation for trusted and reliable service, helping us to distinguish ourselves from competitors and boosting customer satisfaction and retention.”
