The University Competence Center at the Technical University of Munich is an educational service provider.

Our customers are running courses at the university where students learn how to interact with SAP software.

The main challenges we wanted to address was the customer interaction, process automation, and the service management.

One of the key weaknesses was the lack of automation and standardization within our internal processes.

So when implementing and operating and automating cloud infrastructure, it’s very important to first understand the own operations and internal processes,

Systems are constantly provisioned and deprovisioned. The number of our customers, the number of the implicated countries, and the number of students is constantly changing.

Because of the frequent changes we needed a virtualized and consolidated infrastructure where our workloads can be consolidated, and we also experienced a very high manual workload that we needed to automate .

So our solution is basically the whole stack starting from the hardware. We are using IBM Power systems with an XIV as storage.

Then we use AIX as the operating system. Our SAP systems use the DB2 database. And we also use Tivoli Monitoring and the Tivoli Service Automation Manager for data center operations.

We managed to reduce the manual workload of me and my colleagues by about 40% and we are now capable of provisioning a new SAP system in less than half a day instead of three days …

We had significant savings in terms of rack space. We replaced 150 of our servers with just four IBM systems, cutting 13 full racks to only four half-full racks.

We also had savings regarding energy consumption. We reduced our – the consumption for the SAP application landscape by 80%. So by using the DB2 database and its data compression features, we accomplished data storage reduction by 40%.

By automating the most frequent tasks of me and my colleagues, we are now able to address new issues of the customers and we are also able to do more research within our projects.
