Case Study

With assets of approximately USD170 billion, SunTrust Banks, Inc. (SunTrust) is one of the leading financial services holding companies in the United States. Through its subsidiary SunTrust Bank, the company provides deposit, credit, trust and investment services to a broad range of retail, business and institutional customers. Based in Atlanta, SunTrust operates more than 1,600 retail branches and 2,900 ATMs located in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Challenge
SunTrust had begun a business process transformation for its commercial lending department. To accomplish this transformation, SunTrust wanted to bring the enterprise to a cloud-based solution. By doing so, the organization would enable its relationship managers to deliver customer information immediately to back-end systems and would quickly provide those employees with processing progress and other relevant loan status data.

Moving to the cloud posed some challenges. For example, the bank relies on shared services based on the IBM Information Framework standard, and the messages that those services exchange are hierarchical and can be large. Plus, in addition to using Salesforce.com as its front-end CRM solution, the bank relies on many back-end applications for loan origination, underwriting and servicing. If SunTrust was going to move all of its applications to the cloud, it needed to make sure that it could quickly move information between systems to help relationship managers get the information they need. SunTrust began to look for a cloud integration solution.

Solution
SunTrust implemented IBM WebSphere Cast Iron Cloud integration as its cloud integration solution. The WebSphere offering connects the SunTrust back-end enterprise applications, the company’s shared services and the cloud. WebSphere Cast Iron Cloud Integration software provides a simple development platform that eliminates back-end complexity. In addition, the WebSphere product provides connectors that enable it to easily integrate with the company’s Salesforce.com solution. “WebSphere Cast Iron is a very easy-to-implement solution when it comes to taking anything from shared services or business back-end services to the cloud,” says Bala Sundaram, vice president of shared services, SunTrust.

The solution also helps SunTrust connect with its enterprise service bus (ESB). “We have both IBM WebSphere Message Broker and IBM WebSphere MQ, and we have IBM WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus in the back end, so we are able to connect to any of the back-end services and connect to the cloud. So the WebSphere Cast Iron solution’s Salesforce.com awareness as well as its ability to integrate with other ESBs makes the job easy,” says Sundaram.

Benefits
· Helps relationship managers easily work when they are not directly connected to SunTrust’s back-end systems
· Provides the scalability to support the company’s business process transformation, as shown by performance and load tests
· Gives relationship managers easy access to accurate information, helping reduce delivery times for customers
