Case Study

IBM Business Partner Alphinat Inc. develops SmartGuide software, a suite of intuitive drag-and-drop tools that help enterprises, independent software vendors (ISVs) and government agencies accelerate web application development. Recognizing that many organizations fail to capitalize on the full potential of online services, Alphinat created SmartGuide software as a clearer, more direct way to translate business and end-customer needs into convenient online functionality. The solution helps even nontechnical users develop and deploy self-service tools, such as electronic forms or training tools, that seamlessly guide customers and other users through complex procedures and information silos. At the same time, SmartGuide software delivers comprehensive management and reporting functions for increased visibility into development efforts.

Challenge
With more businesses turning to cloud technology to simplify IT manage- ment and rein in costs, Alphinat recognized a significant opportunity for its own business model: using an agile cloud-based architecture, the company could help customers deploy SmartGuide software faster and more efficiently. However, Alphinat also understood that the virtualized approach could create complications when it came to software develop- ment. To capitalize on the cloud while maintaining focus on simplifying and streamlining development, Alphinat sought a partner that could deliver a robust, highly available cloud environment capable of supporting any customer’s development requirements.

Solution
Alphinat engaged IBM and established SmartGuide software on the IBM SmartCloudEnterprise platform. Alphinat customers can now access SmartGuide software as a service, reaping all the benefits of the solution without investing in additional IT infrastructure. They can also work even faster, using the SmartCloud Enterprise environment’s flexibility to meet unique development specifications in little time. According to Curtis Page, EVP & COO for Alphinat Inc. “By deploying SmartGuide from the IBM Cloud, we’re providing customers with faster, more cost-efficient and more flexible access to our leading-edge
development solution.”

To stay true to the core objective of providing a platform-independent solution to streamline customers’ development efforts, IBM and Alphinat worked together to design several custom plugins that automate reconfigurations within the cloud environment. Thus, Alphinat can accommodate particular requirements for the operating system, middleware and software seamlessly and transparently to customers. Further, the SmartCloud Enterprise solution offers a highly flexible architecture, including demand-based operating capacity and the ability to quickly configure virtual instances of SmartGuide software to support development, test and deployment activities. “We expect the cloud-based offering to help customers extend the already significant productivity benefits of SmartGuide software,” says Page.

Overall, Alphinat sees the move to the cloud not only as an improvement in terms of efficiency but also as a key step forward competitively. “As more companies recognize the added value,” says Page, “we expect to win significant business through the cloud.”

Benefits
• Helps customers avoid IT investments for faster ROI and lower costs, encouraging increased sales and revenue for Alphinat
• Establishes a flexible operating architecture that can readily adapt to meet shifting user demands and workloads
• Extends productivity gains by combining accelerated application development with fast provisioning and configuration
