Case Study

Computer Gross Italia S.p.A., an IBM Premier Business Partner, is a distributor of hardware, software and networking solutions, including IBM solutions, to resellers within the Italian market. Headquartered in Empoli, Italy, the company employs approximately 350 people.

Faster deployment and cost savings through simplification and cloud computing

Customers desire advanced IT systems but often don’t want to spend time, money or management establishing and maintaining their IT infrastructure. They prefer to focus on the core values of their business. To ensure they remain at the forefront of the latest technologies, today’s customers seek cloud-based solutions and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) options. Resellers and independent service vendors (ISVs) want to satisfy their customers and stay competitive, but they often don’t have the necessary infrastructure to provide cloud computing. Therefore, they turn to distributors and ask for these services.

To secure an advantage in Italy’s changing IT market, Computer Gross needed a simplified IT solution that would provide faster time to market, reduce costs and improve efficiency in its data center.

To better serve its resellers and their customers, Computer Gross needed to offer state-of-the-art cloud computing capabilities, including IaaS, to its resellers so customers could improve their IT environments and run stronger businesses. Satisfied customers would mean successful business for resellers and an increase in sales for Computer Gross.

Integrated IBM PureSystems solution is designed for cloud computing

Computer Gross learned about the IBM PureSystems family in early 2012, and its technical team immediately understood the potential impact of this new cloud-ready solution. By the end of July 2012, the company implemented and used IBM PureFlex System technology to design its data center infrastructure.

Computer Gross was impressed with the level of choice that came with PureFlex System technology. The company was able to customize its PureFlex System solution, choosing the platform, storage and individual components. Because PureSystems offerings are designed for cloud computing, Computer Gross can work directly with resellers to create a cloud environment for customers.

The PureFlex System solution consolidates all components, storage and system expertise inside one box, and Luca Parelli, IBM Power PureFlex specialist for Computer Gross, explains how this simplification is useful when approaching the IT market: “All its components are designed to work together in synergy, so it’s really important. It’s what IBM called ‘integration by design.’ The Flex System Manager is the single point from which we can manage all the environments.” IBM Flex System Manager™ technology provides a single pane of glass to seamlessly manage the entire infrastructure, allowing the product to run more efficiently.

Simplified management saves costs and speeds time to market

PureFlex System technology provides numerous advantages and expected benefits, allowing Computer Gross to better serve its resellers and their customers. Simplified systems and consolidated components create a single point of management that allows the organization to allocate its technical resources in a more efficient way. Because a smaller team can spend less time managing a streamlined platform, Computer Gross anticipates a 50 percent reduction in administration costs. Further, simplified processes allow the company to speed time to market; Computer Gross expects to reduce the time needed to deploy applications and virtual machines by 50 percent.

PureFlex System technology also helps Computer Gross gain a competitive advantage. In fact, the organization expects to grow its business by 300 additional resellers and 4,000 to 5,000 more customers.

With a cloud-ready solution from the PureSystems family, Computer Gross can offer cloud computing, including IaaS. Francesca Moriani, IBM business unit manager for Computer Gross, explains: “Resellers that want an infrastructure in the data center can choose a private cloud or Infrastructure as a Service. Some months ago, we couldn’t sell IaaS because we didn’t have the right product. Today, we can, thanks to PureFlex.”

Computer Gross can now approach the growing market of managed service providers (MSPs), which often need a certified data center that is security-rich and has cloud capabilities. This is a sizable advantage for Computer Gross because there are no other distributors in the Italian market who can provide these comprehensive offerings.
