Case Study

Novatti is a global software and IT solutions company that specializes in developing payment solutions for the communications industry. Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, the organization develops online charging (prepaid billing), voucher management, and payments solutions such as digital wallets and prepaid online recharge.

Challenge
For a software and solutions company, Novatti was spending a great deal of its IT budget on hardware. A critical component of the organization’s sales cycle is the use of test environments and proof-ofconcept (POC) solutions that allow potential purchasers to thoroughly vet and evaluate Novatti products before buying.

Maintaining sufficient test and demonstration equipment, however, was taxing. Novatti needed to keep on-site multiple hardware platforms, which were frequently reconfigured to support a broad range of applications, capacities and configurations. The IT management costs associated with this process, not to mention the power consumption, were beginning to take their toll, forcing Novatti to consider alternative strategies.

Recognizing the value of a virtualized environment to easily create and reconfigure test and demonstration systems, Novatti began to evaluate the merits of a cloud-based architecture. And as it considered reshaping its test strategy, the business recognized the immediate value that cloud technology could offer to other elements of its business.

Traditionally, Novatti marketed its offerings to larger corporations because of the accompanying hardware and third-party software required to support its solutions. In addition, the setup for a new customer environment typically required at least eight weeks. Although this investment proved valuable for larger businesses dealing with high transaction volumes, the initial setup costs proved prohibitive to smaller companies. Similarly, some organizations didn’t require permanent payment solutions, only desiring support for a limited time, such as a three-month product loyalty campaign.

Novatti realized it could extend its reach into entirely new markets while driving internal efficiencies if it embraced a cloud strategy. But before it could take that step, it needed a partner.

Solution
An IBM Business Partner since 2007, Novatti teamed with IBM to supplement its on-premises offerings with a new Software as a Service (SaaS) deployment model. Customers can now purchase access to the company’s various offerings, including the Novatti Payment System, on a month-to-month basis. To support this transition, Novatti now hosts its software within the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise infrastructure.

The IBM cloud solution provides its users with the freedom to access demand-based capacity wherever needed, helping minimize the amount of physical hardware a company maintains on-site. The SmartCloud Enterprise infrastructure allows users to perform development, test and deployment activities in a secure, scalable environment. Further, its flexibility and pay-as-you-use features expedite performance and transaction processing time for Novatti.

• Opens up new markets, a move that allowed the business to land three major prospects within weeks of service launch
