Case Study

Temenos, an IBM Premier Business Partner, provides banking software systems to retail, corporate, universal, private, Islamic, microfinance and community banks; wealth managers; and financial institutions. Headquartered in Geneva and with more than 60 offices and 3,000 employees worldwide, Temenos has completed in excess of 1,500 customer deployments in more than 125 countries.

Seeking integrated, straightforward technology for core banking software

Banks operate in a high-pressure environment because customers are more sophisticated and have greater and growing expectations, adherence to regulation is mandatory, and there is increased focus on efficiency, cost savings and agility. To manage these pressures, banks have created overly complex IT systems, and they direct many resources and much time and effort into managing their technology and integrating various business components into their IT environments.

Using its TEMENOS T24 (T24) core banking software, Temenos created the T24 model bank, which has numerous preconfigured processes and a process-led implementation approach that ensures banks use best practices to maximize efficiency improvements. The model bank, combined with the process-led implementation approach, delivers projects swiftly and effectively, providing lower implementation risk. In addition, T24 software is a parameter-driven platform, allowing for quick market delivery of new products.

To most effectively deploy T24 software and avoid using disconnected systems, Temenos sought an integrated technology solution on which to run its model bank. Because disparate systems are innately complex, it was extremely difficult to pinpoint a problem when performance challenges occurred. For example, there could be four vendors that Temenos needed to communicate with or five software solutions involved. To avoid such situations, Temenos wanted to offer its customers fast time to value with an integrated, straightforward, resilient, dependable, easily deployable environment, which would allow banks to provide better customer service, become more operationally efficient and grow quickly.

IBM PureSystems offerings provide integration and expertise

Temenos engaged IBM because of the companies’ strong relationship and for its dependable IT services, especially in the banking industry. Mark Gunning, business solutions director, explains, “What’s important about the PureSystems initiative is that it provides an environment that a bank can rely on to be resilient, reliable and scalable. Banks have to trust, and maintain trust in, technology and its vendors, and we trust IBM.” Temenos was attracted to the IBM PureSystems family because IBM was incorporating hardware, software and middleware into one integrated environment, with built-in expertise gained from decades of client engagements.

Essentially, IBM had created a model environment that would complement the Temenos model bank, and the company’s banking software successfully ran on offerings from the PureSystems family. According to Gunning, “This product integrates our depth and experience in banking embodied in our model bank with the expertise of IBM in technology embodied in PureSystems, resulting in an operationally efficient and performance-enabling environment.”

With built-in patterns of expertise, the PureSystems solutions integrate the banking industry’s best practices of hardware, platform software and people, which allow the PureSystems offerings to continue investing in and improving themselves. After implementing both the IBM PureApplication System and IBM PureFlex System solutions, Temenos expects great value to come from increased simplicity, decreased costs and enhanced agility of the PureApplication System offering.

Banks are able to focus time and expertise on improving

Temenos will gain the ability to clearly and confidently define its customers’ technical needs and streamline once-disparate systems to only two components: Temenos software and the comprehensive and integrated PureSystems offerings. Because the IBM systems come prepackaged and predefined, Temenos will be able to deploy a solution quickly and predictably. Migrating core systems is a difficult task, but the PureApplication System and PureFlex System solutions remove a significant amount of risk. In addition, the simplified systems will allow Temenos to identify and correct problems swiftly and accurately.

Temenos anticipates that it will be able to deploy its software using PureSystems offerings in a portion of the time that it used to take to implement a new environment. The company also expects that because the PureSystems solutions are simpler to manage, banks will have an opportunity to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).
