Case Study

One of the world’s largest investor-owned power and gas companies with international operations launched a new independent company to provide smart metering solutions as well as complete intelligent energy measurement services within Germany.

Challenge
The company relies on a business process management (BPM) platform from IBM to automate and monitor customer acquisitions as well as meter data provisioning processes. The company uses this platform to provide metering data to its market partners. The organization’s short-term business strategy is to extend the application of its smart metering technology to support electromobility (e-mobility), smart home and smart grid projects. The company wanted to expand the scope of its BPM solution to support three new use cases for electric vehicles:

• Locating and reserving a charging slot at a public charging station through a smartphone application
• Charging the electric vehicle by authenticating and authorizing the current reservation using a previously authorized radio frequency identification (RFID) tag
• Detecting errors during charging and maintaining the charging station by automatically notifying a technician with the required asset data to solve the issue

Solution
The metering company engaged IBM® Software Services for WebSphere® to implement IBM Rational® and IBM WebSphere software to support the new use cases, which are based on a miniature model of a charging station, a smart meter and an electric vehicle, along with a state-of-the-art smartphone-based user interface.

The company used the cloud-based IBM Blueworks Live™

BPM application to create process models for the three new use cases. The solution also included:
• IBM WebSphere Application Server software as the application server and runtime environment for the user interface
• IBM WebSphere Process Server software as the runtime environment for business processes
• IBM WebSphere Integration Developer software as the development environment for business processes and mediations
• IBM WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus software for routing and transforming messages
• IBM WebSphere MQ Telemetry software as the communication protocol between charging station models and WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus software

The company also used IBM Rational Software Architect software to outline the solution’s architecture and design and IBM Rational Team Concert™ Standard software to share model and development artifacts across the team and to track defects and tasks.
Benefits
• Supports the company’s growth from a smart metering provider to a holistic intelligent energy provider
• Creates a standardized information model that supports reuse
• Helps promote revenue protection and diversification
