Storage Consolidation, Virtualization - Storage

Overview

Centerline Digital is a content marketing agency that develops strategic content marketing plans; then builds, deploys, and measures the tactics to support that plan for enterprise businesses to reach their clients. Centerline crafts the strategy, writes the script, directs the shoots, creates the animations, designs the sites, and develops the code.

Business need:
The growth of the company and the complexity of what Centerline creates lead to the exponential growth of file sizes and data. The existing system was slow and lacked a single point of management. Centerline needed a storage solution that could not only store this information safely and reliably, but also increase the speed and efficiency of their business.

Solution:
Centerline chose the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified with Real-time Compression and the IBM PureFlex System because it was an infrastructure that had compute power, virtualization, networking, and storage all in one.

Benefits:
With 130 Terabytes of storage on the IBM Storwize 7000 Unified, Centerline has capitalized on Real-time Compression, which has saved 40% storage space. Centerline also has six Terabytes of Flash memory and is seeing faster performance to process the massive amount of math in high-end animations. Additionally, Centerline doesn’t worry about managing their storage because the storage is self-optimizing, so files are automatically place of the fastest tier bases on customized rules.

Charles: We all know the answer to the question, “Will I need more storage in the future?” The answer is yes.

Adam: We’ve gone from 25 terabytes to 200 terabytes.

Charles: We realized pretty quickly that we cannot just keep adding more servers, adding more boxes, adding more storage.

Adam: While working with IBM to architect a solution for our needs we realized that our infrastructure needed three things: We needed better networking, we needed better compute power, and we also needed better storage.

With our PureFlex system, it gives us a completely virtualized infrastructure.
…the IBM Storwize v7000 Unified…fits right within that system.

Charles: We chose the Storwize V7000 because it is easy to manage, and highly efficient.

Adam: The old storage systems that we had set up were sporadic and kind of on their own islands. There was no single point of management.

With the V7000 Unified, it’s …a kind of set it and forget it mentality.

We’ve seen our storage grow by over ten times in the last…five or six years…. So, we decided to implement real-time compression on the v7000 Unified.

Charles: Through the use of real time compression, the V7000 saves us up to 40% of our storage space, and with Easy Tier, it automatically moves the files we use most to the fastest storage.

Adam: We don’t have to think about what tier they go on – do they go on the high speed or do they go on the high capacity storage. It does that for us. There’s no babysitting….

As files get larger and more robust…we can… take advantage of flash technologies and easily manage it all from that one single pane of glass.

Charles: The V7000 allows us to add storage as we need it, so we understand we will not be overhauling our entire IT system in the future.
