Case Study

Myers has been developing broadcast management software since 1988. The company provides technology and services for television, radio and other digital media providers designed to improve every aspect of their operations, from contracting to invoicing, from media management to scheduling, and from trafficking to reconciliation.

The need
Over its 30-year history, Myers has attained 97 percent market share with Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member stations. In addition, Myers supports a number of other non-commercial organizations, including public radio, educational, faith-based and government stations.

Any downtime in a customer’s ProTrack TV or ProTrack Radio software from Myers could cause a significant disruption to its operations. Myers must ensure that every layer in the ProTrack technology stack is highly stable, including the back-end database. At the same time, because they are nonprofit organizations, public broadcasters must control costs. They need database-driven software to support day-today operations, but few have room in their staffing budget for a database administrator (DBA).

To keep its solutions affordable, while reducing the complexity of data management, Myers wanted a capable, reliable and scalable database solution.

The solution
Myers simultaneously addressed all of these challenges by embedding an IBM® Informix® database in the technology stack used by the ProTrack TV and ProTrack Radio applications, keeping the complexity of data management invisible to end users. This is the secret to the cost-effectiveness of the ProTrack solutions, and it helps explain why Myers has become the dominant player in its market.

Television and radio stations that use the ProTrack solutions don’t have to buy database licenses, and they don’t have to hire a DBA. All Informix administration is done automatically, so ProTrack TV and ProTrack Radio operate as stand-alone applications. Myers customers have robust online transaction processing (OLTP) capabilities, but some may not even be aware that the functionality is powered by IBM Informix database technology.

Myers is one of more than 2,500 IBM Business Partners that have integrated Informix into solutions that run on Windows, Linux or UNIX systems. By building their applications on an Informix platform, these businesses give their customers a high-quality database while saving them from buying database licenses or dealing with
manageability issues.

Embedding Informix database technology into the ProTrack applications helps keep Myers’ software developers focused on improving functionality, rather than dealing with data management issues. “Using IBM Informix has shortened our time to market for new ProTrack features,” says Crist Myers, president and CEO of Myers.

“Our mission is to provide media facilities—large and small—with software solutions that are highly competitive yet affordable,” Myers adds. “Informix is a core ingredient that allows our technology stack to meet that goal. It’s extremely reliable and scalable with an affordable price point. It just works.”

The benefit

  • Enables broadcast organizations to run cost-effective, database-driven solutions without hiring DBAs
  • Shortens time to market for new software features
  • Helps Myers retain 97 percent market share
