Seong-Hee Nam: Daegu Health College is located in Daegu, the 3rd largest city in Korea. About 7,500 students are studying in about twenty departments, with almost all receiving their educations in the field of health and medical care. Therefore, over its 41-year history, the college has produced around 60,000 graduates who are working nationwide in social health services.

Jae-Do Lee: Today, more than thirty million Koreans use smart phones, showing that the mobile trend has expanded well into society at large. In particular, the students of Daegu Health College are in tune with today’s “twenty-something” trends and so we had to move into mobile services too in order to meet their expectations. At our college, the mobile services we provide reflect the demands of students to get the information they need when and where they want it through the mobile platform, such as for verifying student class registration, checking on grades, viewing class schedules, or searching library materials. Our mobile services were developed in order to satisfy those demands.

Jeong-Ryeaol Jang : In the development of mobile applications, there are two kinds of problems related to complexity which must be considered. Because the devices of users are extremely small and varied, there’s the issue of how to match the user interface to the various devices using the user interface. The other issue is that the information of the server connecting to the units is extremely varied and this leads to the question of how to effectively link these server connections.

Jae-Do Lee: “Smart DH” is the name we have given to the Daegu Health College mobile services being developed using IBM Worklight. In order to provide the same services under mutually different platforms, such as iOS, Android or Windows Mobile, there are a lot of matters that must be considered. I think the way to achieve integrated management is to consider things like the protocols or interfaces that are being used and find ways to solve issues. Thus, the reason we selected Worklight is because the package offers excellent functionality for this kind of integrated management.

Jeong-Ryeaol Jang: The biggest advantages of using the IBM Worklight solution to develop mobile applications are that is shortens development time, and makes it possible to run applications on various devices through just one development process, thus reducing both the time and costs of developing for each individual device. In addition to these cost reductions, because, by achieving faster time-to-market, the company is able to move much more quickly in getting applications onto the market and providing services to customers, which results in incredible business benefits thanks to improved customer and employee satisfaction.

Seong-Hee Nam: I think it is important that we try to update things in a timely manner and to have the systems to do that, because the needs for this can only grow, and the accompanying effects are also large.

Jeong-Ryeaol Jang: I think that Daegu Health College has put together the basic infrastructure through its development of an academic administrative smart phone application. Going forward, FA Solution is planning to work with Daegu Health College to increase the satisfaction of users by adding new and varied functions, such as student IDs, electronic student IDs, searching for seats in the library and others, in order to provide even more convenience to students, professors and others affiliated with the college, thus building an even better smart campus environment.
