Aging Populations & The Internet of Caring Things

People are living longer. By 2040 there will be more elderly people than children for the first time in history. Roughly 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65 today and every day for the next 15 years. This is creating a societal crisis as many countries face the challenge of supporting an aging population. Accessible technology has a profound purpose. It reinvents the relationship between computers and humans and levels the playing field so that all people have equal access to the information they need for work and life. Accessible technology will create the most positive impact on an aging person’s quality of life.

Code Liberation: Getting Girls Gaming

We are women in games — this is a contentious statement. Code Liberation was born out of the New York games scene because of an industry gap that was leaving women behind. This has lead to the growth of a beautiful community, although not without many growing pains. How do we safely grow our community? Being entirely volunteer based, we realized that we could no longer grow without becoming an official non-profit. Currently, we have been tackling this significant challenge of sustainable development. Code Liberation’s mission is to support women in game development by offering free or low cost educational services and provide a platform of community and mentorship in this fraught climate.

Nudges: Tiny Pushes that Influence User Behavior

The value of design has brought about what some call “The Age of Experience” or “The Golden Age of Design.” As the power of great design achieves prominence, we designers should all remember: with great power comes great responsibility. In this workshop, we’ll explore Nudges, the ability to manipulate an audience for good or ill. To “nudge” an audience in a particular direction, flows from a common UX aptitude: the ability to understanding the rationale behind users’ decision-making. Join us as we also unveil the latest addition to the IBM Design Language, a catalog of UX patterns that aim to enhance user experience, quantify the value of design, and improve the business value of a product. It’s Not About an iPhone: Fixing the Encryption Mess

The relationship between the government, tech, and corporations was broken well before the iPhone encryption fight. Working within a legal framework designed for telcos in the 20th century, the government has had to improvise in ways that antagonized its potential partners in the tech and corporate world.

We NEED this relationship to be fixed in a way that both allows the government to protect us, while also protecting our privacy, and keeping corporations safe from potential hackers. This means passing new laws, changing current government practices, and building trust across the spectrum.

In this session we’ll hear from Obama camapign and admin advisor Michael Slaby, IBM’s global threat head Charles Henderson, and corporate security expert Misha Govshteyn on how we got here and what it will take to fix this mess. Learn more
