CASTLE 2020

Virtually from May 11-15, 2020

CASTLE stands for Center for Advanced Studies Technical Link Event, and it aims to align all the current funded projects, foster cross-project collaboration, and match grant application opportunities. CASTLE is a closed-door event that demonstrates our technical commitment to collaborative research projects. Research teams will be able to meet their RCLs and network with other researchers while gaining valuable knowledge for their research projects. Participants will be all collaborators involved in our CAS projects.

It is a long standing tradition that all participants to our IBM CAS projects meet once a year in person for CASTLE. As you are all aware, the unprecedented situation that the new virus created forced us to approach the event virtually.

  • Event dates: The week of May 11 to 15, 2020.
  • Participants: All collaborators involved in our CAS projects.
  • Invitations and Instructions: To be sent directly by email. Remote participation.

We are always looking for ways to improve your experience with CAS. Please take a minute to complete this quick NPS survey.

CASTLE Key Elements

3 to 5 mins Video

For those of you who attended in person CASTLE events in the past, you know that we used to organize an in-person poster session where we would showcase one poster for each one of our projects. At the same poster session different product teams from the lab would showcase their work. This was a perfect opportunity to get to meet other teams in person, and talk with them about future projects. Moving virtually, the situation poses big challenges when it comes to the poster session. We (IBM CAS) do not have yet a digital platform to use for a poster session. Therefore, it is very important that we ask each that for each CAS Project we have a 3 to 5 minutes video where we give an "elevator pitch" about the proejct - NON CONFIDENTIAL. This video will be later on used and sent to the entire IBM Canada Lab, posted on our external website, and showcased at CASCON x EVOKE 2020 later on in the year. The purpose of it is to talk about the project in general terms so that people in and outside of IBM see what is happening in CAS Canada, and get a chance to engage in the conversation and contact you for future collaboration opportunities.

To give everyone a head-start, please use this 1 Page power-point presentation to be filled by every project. This slide can be used in the background of the video. The recording can be done in Webex. To make it nicer, please enable your video cameras when recording the video. If the video cameras are on, the Webex recording will include those, and then people will be able to see who is talking.

BEST VIDEO AWARD: the best video award it will be given at CASCON x EVOKE 2020 during the Gala (alongside with the other awards that we normally give at our conference).

Deadline to have the video ready: Thursday May 14th EOD. We plan on having a website up with all the details the week of May 18th.

Product team meetings:

In the second half of the every day during CASTLE is dedicated for project team meetings. You do NOT need to fill it up with meetings, but there is a requirement of at least 1 hour meeting for each project during that week. We encourage you to reach out to your RCL and schedule a meeting any time between 1:00PMto 5:00PM (EST) any of the CASTLE days. Please include Vio, Tinny and Maria in those meetings so that we can track everything that is going on at CASTLE.

Other meetings:

We are planning on having a meeting every day between 10:00 AM to 11:00AM EST. The details will be sent shortly via meeting invites.

  1. Monday: CASTLE Kick-off
  2. Tuesday: CAS APP and Process
  3. Wednesday: CAS Collaboration Opportunities
  4. Thursday: CAS Team is Listening
  5. Friday: CASTLE Closing & Video Review

Workshops:

Finally, in the past we used to have workshops for students, based on the feedback from our previous events, the students enjoyed them. We are bringing four technical workshops to you this year.

Monday: Cognos Analytics - Getting Started with Reporting and Dashboarding

  • Chair: Dennis Buttera (and Alexander Mah)
  • Virtual Room: Dennis' WebEx*
  • Length: 3 hours
  • Description
    • Part 1 - Getting Started with Reporting: Enterprise Reporting has long been the foundation of business. Reporting Fundamentals is a must for all users who need to report on the data and share across their organization. In this workshop, you'll see how quick and easy it is to get started building world-class reports to analyze your business. This workshop introduces you to some of the newest capabilities included in IBM Cognos Analytics Reporting, and you will be able to try out some of this functionality for yourself.
    • Part 2 - Getting Started with Dashboarding: IBM Cognos Analytics provides Users with data discovery capabilities to visually explore and interact with their data to identify the key insights for improving data driven decisions. Users can perform data discovery and then quickly assemble that information which is most relevant to them into interactive, visually appealing dashboards; all without the need for IT assistance or formal training and without leaving a single User Interface.

Tuesday: Finding Bruno with Watson Virtual Recognition

  • Chair: Alexander Mah (and Abdul Elrahwan)
  • Virtual Room: Alex's WebEx*
  • Length: 2 hours
  • Description
    • Over the course of this workshop, you are going to be learning how to build a visual recognition model with Watson Studio, and then how to deploy an application using that model to the IBM Cloud.

Wednesday: AutoAi with Watson Studio

  • Chair: Abdul Elrahwan (and Tima Pakfetrat)
  • Virtual Room: Abdul's WebEx*
  • Length: 2 hours
  • Description
    • Demonstrates features of the Watson Auto AI in IBM Watson Studio. No coding is required to complete this tutorial. Through this tutorial, you will be using Watson Studio to build a machine learning model which will predict the likelihood of a customer buying camping equipment, based on sample historical customer data.

Thursday: Getting Started with Data Modules and Exploration in Cognos Analytics and Watson Studio

  • Chair: Dennis Buttera (and Alexander Mah)
  • Virtual Room: Dennis' WebEx*
  • Length: 3 hours
  • Description
    • Part 1 - Getting Started with Data Modules: With Cognos Analytics, users are not restricted to existing enterprise data sources.  The data blending and modeling capabilities in Cognos Analytics allows the business user to include external data sources without requiring assistance from IT.  This does not replace IT, it simply augments the user experience to allow the user to work with personal data sets and analyze that data in conjunction with the enterprise data. Users can import external data from files on-premise, data sources and cloud data sources into Cognos Analytics.  Multiple data sources may be shaped, blended, cleansed and joined together to create a custom, reusable and shareable data module for use in dashboards and reports. The same capabilities will be displayed Watson Studio.
    • Part 2 -  Getting Started with Exploration: You can explore your data or investigate visualization from a dashboard or story. As you work, contextual recommendations and advanced analytics insights will be surfaced in a subtle way, so as not to intrude. Take advantage of advanced analytics normally available only in data science tools. You won’t be bothered with positioning widgets or fancy formatting. Just work away, and when you want to present your insights, simply copy your visualizations to a story or dashboard. This workshop introduces you to some of the newest capabilities included in IBM Cognos Analytics, Data Exploration, which utilizes augmented intelligence to accelerate the time to value in finding insights hidden deep within your data, including: Upload Data sources to Explore, Discover relationships in your data, Surface Insights to begin your analysis, Identify patterns and key drivers.
