Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation to Improve Agency Cyber Security (November 14th, 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM)

The impact of a security breach today is not contained to IT, but reverberates across government with potential national security implications. With today’s federal budget constraints and complex digital environment, government agencies are faced with major challenges to protect the nation’s infrastructure and sensitive data while complying with extensive security and performance requirements. More sophisticated external attacks and insider threats are a constant protection issue. Plus, the increasing volume of data, accessed by employees and citizens via mobile devices, cloud environments, and social media amplifies the nation’s security challenge.

To help address this challenge, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated a Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) program. The CDM program will provide specialized monitoring tools and the security consulting services needed to correlate critical security-related information. This holistic approach will enhance risk-based decision making at the agency and Federal enterprise level. The CDM program will evolve into Continuous Monitoring as a Service (CMaaS) providing the ability to combat cyber threats in the civilian and “.gov” networks.

This seminar will provide a background of the DHS CDM program; discuss what CDM is, and why it is important for government agencies to implement it. Strategies, technologies, and tools to address CDM will also be presented as will examples of CDM applied in practice including how IBM applies CDM internally to its 450,000 employees worldwide.
