DescriptionScalable Automation The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library is an excellent choice if you are:
The 3583 tape library contains from one to six IBM LTO Ultrium tape drives that each have a native data transfer rate of 15 MB/second and a cartridge capacity of 100 GB. The drives feature data compression hardware using an adaptation of IBM's Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC), which provides an effective data rate of up to 30 MB/second and a cartridge capacity of up to 200 GB (with 2:1 compression) on IBM Ultrium media. The 3583 models feature cartridge slot storage capacities of 18, 36, and 72 cartridges, providing total capacities of 1.8 TB, 3.6 TB, and 7.2 TB of native data. With compression, the largest model of the 3583, the Model L72, can store 14.4 TB of data. The 3583 Models L18 and L36 can be field upgraded to increase their capacity up to 72 cartridges and six drives. The 3583 library comes standard with a one-cartridge I/O station on Models L18 and L36 or a 12-cartridge I/O station on Model L72. Models L18 and L36 can be upgraded to a 12-cartridge I/O station with optional feature number 8012. The I/O station can be defined as I/O slots or data storage, and the definition affects the number of cartridges available for data storage. Refer to the table below for the various combinations and resulting data capacities.

The compression technology used in the tape drive can typically double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed. Each IBM Ultrium 3583 Scalable Tape Library has a display on the front panel that is used for displaying status and error codes. An operator control panel with an LCD display is on the front of the machine and provides status information and menu options. From this panel the operator can initiate actions such as moving and loading tape cartridges or invoking diagnostics. A key lock provides front door locking. The IBM Ultrium 3583 Scalable Tape Library is designed for desktop operation but an optional rack-mounting kit allows installation into an ANSI/EIA standard 19-inch rack with 14 EIA units of space. For customers requiring extra redundancy in their storage operations, an additional DC power supply option is available.
The IBM Ultrium tape drive supports the new Ultrium High Capacity Tape
Cartridge, designed for increased tape speeds and high-density data
recording.

The IBM Ultrium 3583 Scalable Tape Library and industry-leading software applications lead in addressing these requirements and constitute a functionally rich tape storage solution incorporating LTO Ultrium tape technology. You also gain flexibility of automated tape library management and unattended save/restore operations. The IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library contains from one to six IBM Ultrium tape drives with industry-leading 100 GB native capacity and up to 200 GB with typical 2:1 hardware data compression. This increased capacity combined with up to 72 cartridges available for use extends the total library capacity up to 14.4 TB of compressed data. Multiple drive models provide additional enhanced functions, such as faster transfer of data, simultaneous backup, concurrent read-write operations, and fault tolerance. The 3583 offers improved performance, additional function, and greater capacity (number of drives and cartridges) over the existing IBM 7331 8mm Tape Library or IBM 7337 Digital Linear Tape libraries offered by IBM. The 3583 improves performance by reducing load/unload time. It provides an alternative to DLT, ¼-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives. If you have applications where fast access to data is important or need a very reliable tape subsystem, you should consider the IBM Magstar® MP 3570 Tape Subsystem. It offers Magstar reliability at open systems prices and is better suited for time-sensitive applications such as storage management, network serving, mixed digital libraries, image processing, and data warehousing. For mission-critical data protection, optimized for enterprise multimode and server attachment and read and write intensive applications, consider the proven IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem or the IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library. Support for the Scalable Tape Library 3583 is planned for the following products:
IBM intends to work together with the ISV product manufacturers listed above to support the 3583 Scalable Tape Library. Individual application vendors should be contacted for specific information and availability dates. The list represents our best knowledge at the time of publication and does not imply completeness. Additional software support is available through library management software products. The software to manage the 3583 Scalable Tape Library is not provided with the libraries. Supporting software and applications must be obtained separately from IBM, IBM Business Partners, or independent software providers. A list of compatible software is available from your IBM representative or at: Limitations: Each 3583 library must contain at least one Ultrium tape drive and cartridges. Total LVD SCSI cable length is limited to 25 m (81 ft) using point-to-point interconnection (for example, one host connected to only one tape drive). Total LVD SCSI cable length is 12 m (39 ft) using multidrop interconnection (for example, one host connected to more than one tape drive on the same SCSI bus). Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.1 m (0.33 ft). Total HVD SCSI cable lengths are limited to 25 m (81 ft) using point-to-point or multidrop interconnection. Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.2 m (0.66 ft). All drives installed at the plant are Ultrium tape drives and are installed sequentially beginning at position 1. Data transfer rates on the SCSI bus can be affected by the amount of IBM Ultrium drives attached to the bus. For optimal performance, it is recommended that no more than two IBM Ultrium drives be attached to an individual SCSI bus. The weight of the 3583 Scalable Tape Library is over 200 pounds. Several 3583s could be mounted in a rack enclosure and a tipping hazard could be created. Customers are advised to take necessary safety precautions when mounting multiple 3583 libraries. Although the compression technology can increase the amount of data stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed. For performance reasons, the AS/400 configurator limits the attachment to one device per adapter (IOP/IOA). Installing more than one IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drive on an IOP/IOA may have an impact on tape performance. Installing more than one Ultrium drive on a SCSI bus may impact system performance. Intermixing of other SCSI devices on the same SCSI bus as the 3583 Scalable Tape Library may impact performance of those devices.
The 3583 Scalable Tape Library operating environment must not conflict
with media operating and storage requirements. If media is stored in the
3583 Scalable Tape Library for more than ten hours the media storage
temperature requirements must be met.
