Overview

The IBM eServer p5 575 (9118-575) is available with a 16-way 1.5 GHz POWER5™ system planar, enabling configurations of 16-way 1.5 GHz POWER5 p5-575 cluster nodes, which are ideal for many high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

The 16-way 1.5 GHz POWER5 p5-575 system is packaged in a p5-575 2U form factor. Up to 12 nodes can be deployed in a single 42U-tall, 24-inch rack, offering you supercomputing power in an extremely dense and cost-effective system. Multiple racks of p5-575 nodes may be combined to provide a broad range of powerful cluster solutions. Up to 128 p5-575 nodes may be clustered together for a total of 2,048 processors.

Currently available 8-way 1.9 GHz planars and 16-way 1.5 GHz planars may coexist within a p5-575 rack configuration.

The 16-way 1.5 GHz planar uses innovative, 64-bit, copper-based, dual-core POWER5 microprocessors in a 16-way configuration. Each dual-core module supports 36 MB of Level 3 cache and up to eight memory DIMMs with point-to-point memory-to-processor connections. Each 16-way node includes 64 slots for memory DIMMs. The p5-575 provides memory capacity from 1 GB to 256 GB. With the optional I/O Assembly with PCI-X and RIO-2, along with a system I/O drawer, up to twenty-four PCI-X cards and up to eighteen 15,000 rpm disk drives per node are available.

Other available, standard p5-575 features include:

The 16-way 1.5 GHz POWER5 p5-575 supports AIX 5L™ V5.2 and V5.3 and Linux™ operating systems. These operating systems can run simultaneously in different partitions within the p5-575 node.

The 16-way 1.5 GHz POWER5 p5-575 is supported with the IBM eServer pSeries® Cluster 1600 running Cluster Systems Management (CSM) V1.4.1 (for both AIX 5L V5.2 and V5.3 and both SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for POWER systems and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 for POWER.)

Description

The p5-575 is characterized by innovative, elegant conceptual design and packaging. Mounted in a sleek 2U enclosure, the modular p5-575 allows users to deploy up to 12 nodes in a single 24-inch system frame.

The enclosure includes four upgradeable component modules, each one custom-designed to satisfy the requirements of high-performance, high-density computing. The integrated, highly efficient power distribution system is embedded into the node's lid. The DC Power Converter Assembly (DCA) relies on embedded circuitry rather than external wiring, providing more reliable, efficient power distribution. The lid is hinged, opening easily for access to the processor and memory module, which contains the distinctive single-core POWER5 processors and system memory.

The processor and memory module contain the heart of the system: eight POWER5 processors, each with 36 MB of dedicated cache, and point-to-point connections to up to eight memory DIMMs — an implementation intended to provide exceptionally high sustained memory bandwidth in support of the most demanding HPC applications.

The front-end cooling module includes two air-intake ventilation grids and two custom-designed blowers with high-capacity impellers and high-efficiency motors that are designed for extended life and easy serviceability. At the back of the enclosure, the I/O control module features up to six fully independent I/O mezzanine buses designed for very high I/O bandwidth.

The p5-575 offers:

The 16-way 1.5 GHz POWER5 p5-575 is supported with the Cluster 1600 running CSM V1.4.1 (for both AIX 5L V5.2 and V5.3 and both SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for POWER systems and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 for POWER).

Product positioning

The p5-p575 is positioned as a substantially enhanced POWER5 system follow-on to the p655 cluster node. Like the p655, the p5-p575 is positioned as an extremely effective solution to the requirements of the most demanding, memory bandwidth-intensive HPC applications.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
