Ultrium 2 Tape DrivesThe Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 supports the IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drive. The IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drive is the second-generation LTO Ultrium tape drive in the IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium family of products. The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive offers the following significant improvements over the Ultrium 1 Tape Drive:
Ultrium 2 Ultrium 1 Cartridge Load Time 15 seconds 18 seconds Maximum Rewind Time 80 seconds 110 seconds Average File Access Time 49 seconds 73 seconds Proven IBM LTO Ultrium 1 features enhanced in the IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drive include:
Multi-Path support
The patented Multi-Path function of the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 supports a sharing
of the library robotics. This is accomplished by partitioning the library into two multiple logical
libraries and providing each logical library its own separate and distinct drive, control path, and
storage slots. The input/output (I/O) slot is shared on a first-come-first-served basis. This type
of partitioning is designed to allow heterogeneous applications to share the library robotics
independent of each other. Cartridges under library control are not shared between logical
libraries, nor allowed to be moved between logical libraries. An example of heterogeneous sharing
is a Windows 2000 application using the drive and storage slots of one logical library while a UNIX
application uses the drive and slots of another logical library.
High-performance tape cartridgeThe tape cartridge capacity of the IBM TotalStorage Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridge has doubled over the original IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Data Cartridge to 200 GB native capacity (400 GB with 2:1 compression). Both cartridges have been designed to provide several enhancements over previous tape technologies. They are designed to work with tape drives that have increased tape speeds and high-density data recording. The case is specially designed for use in automated libraries and is designed for repeated, unattended, trouble-free handling. The tape itself is an advanced metal particle tape developed for durability and capacity. Product positioningAs you compare competitive tape solutions, consider:
The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 and compatible software applications lead in addressing these requirements and constitute a functionally rich tape storage solution incorporating LTO Ultrium tape technology. You can help gain flexibility of automated tape library management and unattended save/restore operations. The Ultrium Tape Library is an excellent choice for tape automation for xSeries, pSeries, RS/6000, iSeries, AS/400, and other popular open systems. The 3582 Model L23 utilizes the patented Multi-Path architecture to help allow homogeneous or heterogeneous open systems applications to share the library robotics. The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 offers a 24 cartridge capacity and holds up to two IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives. It provides excellent price/performance in the open systems environments where the tape automation requirements are satisfied by one to two drives or a library capacity of up to 9.6 TB (with 2:1 compression) or up to 4.8 TB native. The 3582 Model L23 is designed to address growing storage requirements and shrinking backup windows and is part of a family of IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium tape products. The 3582 Model L23 is an excellent tape storage solution for customers with existing digital linear tape experience or requiring high-performance automated tape backup. In addition to reading and writing on IBM LTO Ultrium-format tape cartridges, the Ultrium 2 Tape Drives provide an enhanced functional alternative to DLT/SDLT, 1/4-inch, 4mm, 8mm/AIT, or IBM Magstar® MP 3570 tape drives. For capacity requirements in the 3.6 TB to 28.8 TB (compressed) range with a scalable automation need, the Ultrium Scalable Tape Library 3583 should be considered with its 1 to 6 IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives and 18 to 72 cartridge capacity. For capacity requirements greater than 28.8 TB (compressed), the IBM TotalStorage UltraScalable Tape Library 3584 should be considered. The UltraScalable Tape Library 3584 can match system capacity and performance requirements from 28 TB to 1,376 TB (56 TB to 2,752 TB with 2:1 compression) using up to 192 IBM Ultrium tape drives in up to 16 3584 library frames. For capacity requirements less than 1.4 TB (compressed), the IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Autoloader 3581 and the IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Drive 3580 should be considered. For mission-critical data protection, consider the proven IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590 or the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494 which are optimized for high-cycle and start/stop intensive tape applications and have enterprise multi-mode and host attachment.

Select "LTO Support," then the "Interoperability Matrix and Software ISVs," and view the "Supported Storage Management Software" for the product. IBM continues to work with ISVs to support the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23. Individual application vendors should be contacted for specific information and availability dates. Consult with ISV providers for their support of mixed drive types and media types in the same logical library. Compatibility: The IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives can read and write original IBM LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges. The LTO Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridges can only be used on the IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives. However, IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives and cartridges can be resident in the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 with IBM LTO Ultrium 1 tape cartridges. Limitations: Although the compression technology can increase the amount of data stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed. Fibre Channel cable lengths are limited to 500 m (1650 ft). Total LVD SCSI cable length is limited to 25 m (81 ft) using point-to-point interconnection (for example, one host connected to only one tape drive). Total LVD SCSI cable length is 12 m (39 ft) using multi-drop interconnection (for example, one host connected to more than one tape drive on the same SCSI bus). Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.1 m (0.33 ft). Total HVD SCSI cable lengths are limited to 25 m (81 ft.) using point-to-point or multi-drop interconnection. Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.2 m (0.66 ft). Data transfer rates on the SCSI bus can be affected by the amount of IBM Ultrium Tape Drives attached to the bus. For optimal performance, it is recommended that no more than two IBM Ultrium Tape Drives be attached to an individual SCSI bus. Installing more than one IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drive on a SCSI bus may impact system performance. Intermixing of other SCSI devices on the same SCSI bus as the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 may impact performance of those devices.
The Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 operating environment must
not conflict with media operating and storage requirements. If media is
stored in the Ultrium Tape Library 3582 Model L23 for more than ten
hours the media storage temperature requirements must be met.
