DESCRIPTION

Two Editions

To meet your individual requirements, ADSM for OS/2 Version 2 Release 1 is available in two editions. The Single Server Edition is an entry-level product that provides the storage management functions of ADSM for OS/2 on a single server for the server's files. At any time, you may upgrade to the Network Edition which expands the storage management functions to the network environment for a variety of workstations and LAN file servers.

Support for Multiple Clients

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager is a client/server storage management product that provides administrator-controlled, highly automated, centrally scheduled, network-based backup and archive functions for workstations and LAN fileservers. It backs up data from clients running on:

Additionally, ADSM provides a backup agent for Lotus Notes database backup and recovery (on OS/2 client).

For a current list of supported clients and related information, see the ADSM Web Site at:

Disaster Recovery Improvements

Server Database Backup and Recovery: Server database backup and recovery is a comprehensive solution that is designed to help recover the ADSM database in the event of the loss of all or part of the database. The backup can be either a full backup or after an initial full backup, it may only be necessary to do an incremental backup. When you perform an incremental backup, only those pages that have been changed since the last backup are backed up, therefore greatly reducing the backup time.

Storage Pool Backup and Recovery: Storage pool backup and recovery is a comprehensive solution that is designed to help recover ADSM storage pools in the event of the loss of all or part of the ADSM storage pools. This function also supports incremental backups and allows backups to take place while the server is operating and available to clients.

As part of a disaster recovery plan, ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 can identify removable media volumes containing storage pool backup data to be sent to an off-site location. In turn, ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 can identify which volumes you may wish to return in the event of a loss of the physical ADSM server or the loss of a few volumes at the on-site location.

Scheduling Activity Enhancements

Server command scheduling enhancements allow the scheduling of ADSM administrative commands. This enables the scheduling of the new database and storage pool backup functions. In addition, you can schedule administrative commands that depend on relative dates and times so that, for example, you can specify that a command be executed four hours from now without indicating the exact time for the execution. By using the -pre and -post options, it is now possible to schedule client functions, and issue commands before and after the scheduled function. Some client functions that can be scheduled are restore and retrieve on command line clients, and client operating system commands on all but the Windows client.

Partial Object Retrieve

For Application Program Interface (API) clients, ADSM for OS/2 now adds an enhancement known as Partial Object Retrieve (POR). POR gives the application the ability to batch like objects together into a larger super-object and selectively retrieve all or part of the super-object. The ability of POR to do only a partial object retrieve improves retrieval performance and enables a reduction in storage requirements. This can be very important for applications in the finance, petroleum, insurance and other data-intensive industries.

Additional ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 Server Functions

Support for Generic Removable File Devices: ADSM for OS/2 now supports a new set of drives with removable media. The drive manufacturers' device support is used by ADSM. Such devices include the Iomega Zip and Jaz drives and other cartridge and optical-based drives that work on OS/2.

New Shared Memory Protocol: ADSM for OS/2 Version 2 supports a new shared memory protocol for use when the client and server are on the same system. This protocol uses fewer system resources than Named Pipes.

Support for IBM OS/2 Warp SMP: ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 includes support for IBM OS/2 Warp SMP in the base media package.

Additional Device Support: ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 includes significant additional device support over ADSM/2 Version 1.2. Refer to the Technical Information section for a list of devices supported. Also refer to the ADSM Web Site:

which maintains a current listing of devices supported by ADSM.

Administrative Client Enhancements

The AIX, OS/2, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, Windows 32-bit, and Sun Microsystems SunOS or Solaris administrative clients now have a GUI which has been reorganized into a collapsible tree structure. This enables the administrator to jump immediately to certain functions without having to traverse several administrative GUI panels.

HSM

The HSM support for the AIX and Sun Solaris 2.5 clients, also referred to as the Space Management feature, migrates rarely accessed files to ADSM server storage while the files most frequently used remain on the local file systems. The user can tailor which files should be migrated to ADSM server storage based on size and last reference date. At some later time, if a migrated file is accessed, HSM will transparently recall the migrated file from the ADSM server storage.

The HSM support is integrated with the ADSM backup-archive function. If a migrated file is backed up or archived, the ADSM server copies the file from HSM storage to backup-archive storage without the need to recall the migrated file.

When using HSM, you can defer the need to purchase additional disk storage on your workstations or file servers. By migrating rarely accessed files to the ADSM server storage, the HSM feature ensures that sufficient free storage is available at the user's workstation or file server, giving users the perception of having almost unlimited local storage.

The HSM function makes the most efficient and economical use of distributed storage resources by moving files to ADSM storage when the user needs additional free space. HSM takes advantage of lower cost storage resources, such as tape and optical, available in the network environment.

Lotus Notes 4.1 Support for Lotus Notes Backup Agent

This support provides incremental backup and recovery of Lotus Notes databases. For a further description of this function, refer to Software Announcement 295-467, dated November 7, 1995.

Oracle Backup Agent for Evaluation or Testing

The Oracle Backup Agent will allow ADSM to backup Oracle databases via an API into Oracle's Enterprise Backup Utility. This copy is provided to offer you the opportunity to evaluate or test this backup agent and is available in the AIX Version 3 client PTF IP20847 or AIX Version 4 client PTF U444049. (See Statement of General Direction.)

AS/400 (R) API Support

ADSM now supports development of AS/400 backup-archive clients via an API. The AS/400 API no-charge feature may be ordered for existing ADSM servers or for new installations. The application developer is not responsible for maintenance of the ADSM AS/400 API code furnished in this interface. Interested customers and developers should obtain the Licensed Program Offering for installation on their AS/400 hardware.

Backup-Archive Client Date and Time Filtering for Restore/Retrieve

Command line options, -fromdate and -todate, have been added to ADSM to allow the user to query, restore or retrieve files backed up (or archived) within a defined time period. Time filtering refines that window by accepting -fromtime or -totime. This is particularly helpful if the files of interest were processed during a schedule, which often runs on both sides of midnight.

Incremental Backup by Date

Incremental backup by date uses the date as the single criterion for backup. The advantage of this function is that it bypasses the housekeeping tasks of the regular incremental backup and, therefore, takes less time. However, it is necessary that a regular incremental backup be run periodically.

OS/2 Client Passwordaccess=Generate

The Passwordaccess=Generate option was added to the OS/2 backup-archive and API client command line and GUI. It keeps an encrypted password on the workstation to use during session initiation. If the password expires, a new password will be generated (hence the name).

X/Open API Compliance for AIX and Solaris Clients

ADSM supports the Backup Services API specifications developed by the X/Open International Standards committee. These specifications include source procedure calls, structures and return codes used by the AIX and Solaris clients. They answer the requirement to standardize an API between applications needing backup services and Storage Management vendors.

Program Package -- program media with documentation.

The basic ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 license includes support for the ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 Single Server Edition, basic device support, and authorizes you to attach one OS/2 client. For the Single Server Edition, the user may only run on the same system as the ADSM server. If you want the Network Edition, now or at a later date, you will also need to order the Network Edition Enabler feature.

A user is a non-administrative client attached to the ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager server. It can be a backup/archive client, an API client, an OpenEdition MVS client or a Space Management (HSM) client. Note that for the Single Server Edition, there is only one user, which must run on the same server system.

An administrative client controls and monitors the ADSM server through ADSM administrator commands. There is no additional charge for the administrative client.

For the Network Edition feature, ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 is per-user priced, based on the number of additional users authorized to attach to an ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 server. These User Authorizations increase the number of clients supported by the ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 server.

Optional Features

For the Single Server Edition product, the Environment Support for Desktop, Environment Support for UNIX, Environment Support for Space Management, and Environment Support for OpenEdition MVS optional features do not apply, and therefore, should not be ordered. The Network Edition is a prerequisite for these optional features.

The Environment Support features enable the server to support each appropriate client type.

The base ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 server license authorizes the attachment of selected devices for storage of the user data. The Device Support Module features add authorization for additional devices and libraries. Refer to the Technical Information section for the list of devices supported by each module. The Device Support Modules as well as the Secondary Server Attachment are available for both the Single Server Edition and the Network Edition.

The Secondary Server Attachment authorizes an ADSM server to attach to a library for which a Device Support Module has already been purchased by a sharing ADSM server.

Customers using multiple ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1 servers attached to a single library controlled by those servers may, at their discretion:

An AIX or Solaris client running with the Environment for Space Management feature requires a user authorization unless the workstation on which it is running already has a client which has obtained an authorization. In other words, the HSM client can share a user authorization with an AIX backup-archive client.

The Lotus Notes backup agent running on an OS/2 workstation requires one user authorization. If that workstation is also running an ADSM OS/2 client, then an additional user authorization would be required. In this case, the Environment Support for Desktop feature is not required, because the default environment on the ADSM for OS/2 server supports the OS/2 client.

An Oracle backup agent running in an AIX environment requires its own user authorization. If that workstation is also running another AIX client, that client would require its own user authorization. However, only one Environment Support for UNIX feature is required.
