Intended Customers

Key Prerequisites

An AS/400 system that supports OS/400 V3R7.

Planned Availability Date

November 8, 1996

DESCRIPTION

Version 2.1 Enhancements

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager is a client/server storage management product that provides administrator-controlled, highly automated, centrally scheduled, network-based backup and archive functions for a wide variety of workstations and LAN fileservers.

Some of the enhancements provided with ADSM for AS/400, Version 2.1 include off-site backup and recovery for the server database and storage pools, enhanced Administrative GUI, and HSM for the AIX client. More information on these and other Version 2.1 enhancements previously announced can be found in Software Announcement 296-191, dated June 4, 1996.

Additional Enhancements New With this Announcement

AS/400 API: ADSM for AS/400 now provides an AS/400 API, which allows users to develop their own application so their AS/400 system functions as an ADSM backup-archive client.

HSM for Solaris 2.5: The HSM function now is supported on the Solaris 2.5 client in addition to the AIX client. HSM, also referred to as the Space Management feature, migrates rarely accessed files to ADSM server storage while the files most frequently used remain on the local files systems. More information on ADSM HSM can be found in Software Announcement 296-191, dated June 4, 1996.

Oracle Backup Agent (for Evaluation or Testing): The Oracle backup agent allows ADSM to backup Oracle databases via an API into Oracle's Enterprise Backup Utility. This copy is provided to offer you the opportunity to evaluate or test this backup agent and is only available in the AIX Version 3 client PTF IP20847 or AIX Version 4 client PTF U444049. Refer to Statement of General Direction.

STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION

IBM intends to provide an application program interface for the ADSM AIX client platform that will help support the Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility by year-end 1996.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: Refer to Software Announcement 296-191, dated June 4, 1996, for the list of storage devices that are supported by ADSM for AS/400.

In addition to the devices listed in the Software Announcement, ADSM for AS/400 supports the following in Device Support Module, 2 which is included with the base product:

SCSI Attached Tape Transports

You can check with IBM for the most current list by looking at the ADSM World Wide Web (WWW) site at http://www.storage.ibm.com/adsm or by contacting the IBM Information Support Center at 800-IBM-2468 (426-2468) and asking for STAR 20. For a fax copy, call 800-IBM4FAX (426-2469) and request document number 3451.

This file is available on CompuServe (GO ADSM, Section 1), and on the Internet (ftp index.storsys.ibm.com, get /adsm/info/adsmdevt.txt).

Requirements for ADSM for AS/400 Server

Requirements for Solaris 2.5 HSM Client: The Sun Solaris 2.5 HSM Client requires the Space Management feature and the following hardware and software: AS/400 API: The AS/400 API requires the following hardware and software: Note: An Integrated Language Environment(R) (ILE) is required to use the AS/400 API. The first ILE compiler available is ILE C/400(R).

Lotus Notes Backup Agent: (via OS/2 client)

The Lotus Notes backup agent requires the following:

Refer to Software Announcement 296-191, dated June 4, 1996, for the hardware and software requirements for the previously announced ADSM clients.

The most up-to-date information on the technical requirements for ADSM clients can be found in the WWW at:

You can also call 800-IBM-4FAX (426-4329) and request a fax copy of document 2349 for information on the clients.

Performance Considerations: ADSM performance will vary depending upon a customer's particular configuration, the client/server options, and customization.

Care should be taken in implementing HSM support for workstations or file servers connected to an ADSM server over a low-speed (less than 56KB) link. Excessive migration/recall of frequently used files can dramatically slow normal operations.

Security, Auditability, and Control

AS/400 programs use the security and auditability features of the OS/400 operating system. Usage of these facilities is optional. The security measures supplied by OS/400 are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying resources, but do not prevent it. OS/400 security and auditability features include:

To achieve increased security, the OS/400 controls should be combined with physical security and a division of duties.

The security and auditability features of the announced program depend on the function of the OS/400 operating system.

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

ORDERING INFORMATION

Refer to the AS/400 Software Terms, Ordering Information, and Charges for V3R7 in Software Announcement 296-307, dated September 3, 1996.

Refer to Software Announcement 296-191, dated June 4, 1996.

The AS/400 API, the Solaris 2.5 backup-archive client and HSM support, and NCR UNIX SVR4 3.0 are currently available only via a PTF. PTFs can be downloaded from the ADSM WWW site at http://www.storage.ibm.com/adsm until such time as the CFAS400 configurator is updated.

Before ordering or downloading the Solaris 2.5 client, it is necessary to order the Environment Support for UNIX feature, if not already ordered. In addition, if using the HSM function, it is necessary to order the Space Management Environment feature, if not already ordered.

The AIX Version 3 client PTF IP20847 or the AIX Version 4 client PTF U444049 will include a copy of the Oracle Backup Agent for evaluation or testing. The Oracle backup function will be available for use at no additional charge until the priced Oracle Backup Agent becomes available fourth quarter 1996.

An Oracle backup agent running in an AIX environment requires its own user authorization. If that workstation is also running another AIX client, that client would require its own user authorization; however, only one Environment Support for UNIX feature is required.

Upgrades From Version 1.2 To Version 2.1

The following upgrade features enable the conversion from ADSM/400, Version 1.2 (5763-SV1) and ADSM/400 Version 1.2 (5716-SV1) to ADSM for AS/400, Version 2 Release 1 (5716-SV2).

The Device Support Module features must be ordered based on the total GB capacity licenses that existed on the system being upgraded. This must include the 25GB capacity license that came with the base product. If the system being upgraded supported UNIX clients, then the Environment Support for UNIX Clients upgrade feature is required.

Migration from ADSM for AS/400 V2.1 for V3R2 to ADSM for AS/400 V2.1 for V3R7

The upgrade path from ADSM for AS/400, V2.1, 5763-SV2 (for V3R2) to ADSM for AS/400 V2.1, 5716-SV2 (for V3R7) includes no-charge features for equivalent configurations.

There are no conversion features from ADSM/400, V1.2, 5733-197.

Refer to Software Announcement 296-191, dated June 4, 1996, for more detailed ordering information.
