Overview

AS/400 (R) Client Access (TM), the world's leading AS/400 desktop connectivity product, has branched into two new families -- Client Access Family for Windows (R) and Client Access Family -- that allow you to optimize your investments in desktop environments. Client Access Family for Windows provides the latest technology for Windows workstations, while Client Access Family retains solutions for OS/2 (R), DOS, and RUMBA/400 environments. With the introduction of Client Access Family for Windows, a new Windows 3.1 client, Enhanced for Windows 3.1, is available. It includes:

Client Access Family for Windows includes Lotus (R) Mail 4.5, the new version of cc:Mail (TM) for the Internet 1.0. This POP3*-enabled e-mail product supports both Windows NT (TM) 4.0 and Windows 95.

Both Client Access families have standard-setting desktop services that integrate the AS/400 and the PC. These services provide a foundation for delivering client/server capabilities to today's and tomorrow's business environment.

Client Access enables end users and application programmers to leverage business information, applications, and resources across an enterprise. Client Access Family for Windows further enhances the link between the AS/400 and Windows environment, while Client Access Family maintains the functions previously available. No matter which family you select, Client Access provides PC desktop users with access to AS/400 resources in a secure, graphical, and integrated manner.

DESCRIPTION

Client Access Families

AS/400 Client Access is repackaged to reflect the different operating systems used with Client Access. For customer environments that concentrate on Windows as the client platform, there is AS/400 Client Access Family for Windows. For other environments, there is AS/400 Client Access Family.

AS/400 Client Access Family for Windows clients include:

AS/400 Client Access Family clients include:

Client Access Family for Windows

Client Access Family for Windows delivers the premier solution for AS/400-to-Windows desktop connectivity and function. The wide expanse of connectivity includes TCP/IP, IPX, and SNA for token-ring and Ethernet LAN (IPX support is provided only with the Windows 95/NT client). SDLC, asynchronous, X.25, and twinax communications support is available with SNA. AnyNet (R), offering protocol independence, further enhances connectivity options with the ability to run APPC over TCP/IP. AS/400 facilities can be accessed through several display and print emulators: PC5250, Graphical Access, Systems Object Access, and, exclusive with the Windows 95/NT client, Operations Navigator. End-user tools such as graphical data transfer, network print, network drives, and file serving also extend AS/400 resources to the Windows desktop. AS/400 resources and services are further extended through use of APIs such as ODBC, Data Queues, Remote Commands, and Remote SQL.

Client Access for Windows 95/NT Client

E-mail Support

With Lotus Mail 4.5, you can send and receive mail anywhere in the world using Internet SMTP/MIME mail standards and AS/400 post office services. By utilizing Client Access for Windows 95/NT's protocol independence, Lotus Mail works on TCP/IP, IPX, and SNA/APPC networks. Integration with the AS/400 includes a single log-on and directory functions like the AS/400 System Directory.

Client Access Enhanced for Windows 3.1 Client

Client Access Enhanced for Windows 3.1 is a new client in the Client Access Family for Windows. Use this client on Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 desktops. It expands on Windows 3.1 client capabilities to be more consistent with its other 32-bit family member, Client Access for Windows 95/NT client. This consistency in communications protocol, emulation features, national language support, and API support sets the standard for Windows and AS/400 connectivity. Communications

The Enhanced for Windows 3.1 client includes the following communications support:

For remote asynchronous connections, Hayes Autosync is supported. This standard enables users to dial-up asynchronously and connect into the AS/400 communications port. This eliminates the need for AS/400 ASCII workstation controllers for casual remote users.

Within the same PC, you can run concurrent communications protocols on the same adapter. This is particularly useful when running SNA and TCP/IP or AnyNet and TCP/IP.

Client Management

Management and administration of the Enhanced for Windows 3.1 client has been improved with:

Graphical Interfaces to the AS/400

The latest version of PC5250, Version 4.1, is significantly improved with:

Graphical Access for OS/400 can also be used for 5250 emulation. It transforms OS/400 "green screens" and many other AS/400 licensed program product screens, including OfficeVision/400 (TM), into a graphical, point-and-click interface.

System Object Access provides a native GUI to simplify working with common OS/400 objects such as printers, spooled files, jobs, job logs, and messages. An Advanced Function Viewer is included for viewing spool files from a PC display.

Data Access

The data transfer options available in Client Access for Windows 3.1 have been enhanced with this new client.

Database Access is a graphical, point-and-click method of accessing AS/400 data. Interactively launched from an icon, Database Access uses SQL and the ODBC driver of Client Access. Data is transferred to a viewer; and with macros provided, the data can be directed to Lotus 1-2-3 or Microsoft (R) Excel spreadsheets.

Data Transfer (previously known as File Transfer) is another graphical, point-and-click method of selecting data. Designed to download AS/400 data to the PC and upload PC data to the AS/400, Data Transfer handles several popular PC data types, including the latest Excel data format. Select Data Transfer from the PC5250 toolbar or from an icon in the Client Access program group. Batch transfers, including timed transfers, can direct the PC output to a printer, display, or file. Previously stored Client Access or PC Support transfer requests (those with a file extension of .TTO, .TFR, and .RTO) are recognized and executed by Data Transfer.

Additional support for other standard data access methods are continued in this client, including an ODBC driver. An ODBC driver at Version 2 Level 2 provides transparent data access links to popular PC applications, such as Lotus 1-2-3, Approach (R), or Microsoft Excel.

The Integrated File System (IFS) extends this client's access to data significantly beyond Shared Folders. A single view of data stored in AS/400 files is provided by IFS. Folders/documents, and OS/2- and UNIX (R)-compatible byte-stream files can be accessed easily using the Windows File Manager and Network Drive support.

The data accessed by the Enhanced for Windows 3.1 client uses OS/400's security to provide protection, management of files and databases, and backup/recovery facilities.

Network Printing

Virtual/Network Print enables Windows users to direct PC-generated output to any AS/400-defined printer in the network. Printing components include:

The PC5250 printer emulation service can be used to direct AS/400-managed output to a PC printer connected on SNA/APPC networks or TCP/IP networks using AnyNet.

Application Enablement

The rich suite of APIs continues to be the strength of Client Access. Application enablers such as ODBC, Data Queues, and Distributed Program Call can be used over direct TCP/IP and SNA/APPC networks. Other enablers written directly to SNA interfaces such as Optimized Remote SQL, CPI-C, and ENHAPPC continue to function on an SNA/APPC network or through AnyNet for a TCP/IP environment.

Multimedia capability continues in the Enhanced for Windows 3.1 client with support for Ultimedia (R) System Facilities APIs and a graphical interface.

Migration

A migration utility from the Client Access for Windows 3.1 or DOS Extended clients aids in migration to the Enhanced for Windows 3.1 client. Use the utility to migrate IBM RUMBA/400 profile icons, workstation profiles (with .WSF extensions), print profiles (with .PRN extensions), and keyboard mappings (files with .MAP extensions) to PC5250-recognized files. Additionally, you can migrate information from CONFIG.PCS, NSD.INI, and PCS.INI files.

Note: Macros created in RUMBA/400 do not migrate.

AS/400 Client Access Family

The Client Access Family, which includes OS/2, DOS, and Windows 16-bit clients, maintains the powerful SNA connectivity options, including token-ring and Ethernet LAN, twinax, SDLC, X.25, and asynchronous support. TCP/IP network support is provided for the 16-bit Windows client and 32-bit OS/2 client through AnyNet, a protocol-independent program that runs APPC over TCP/IP networks. Print and display emulation is provided via RUMBA/400, PC5250, and Workstation Function. Other end-user functions include Virtual/Network Print, Graphical File Transfer of data between the PC and AS/400 database (including a graphical Database Query program), and other graphical interfaces that enhance the usability and productivity of AS/400 programs. APIs such as ODBC drivers, Data Queues, Remote Command, and Remote SQL are included in this client family.

AS/400 Client Access Optimized for OS/2

This client supports IBM's latest OS/2 Warp Version 4. All previous fixes that required PTFs are incorporated. This reduces the time required to install the client on the AS/400 system and the PC. Other Clients

The other clients remain functionally the same as previously available in AS/400 Client Access.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

To capitalize on the dynamic development of the Windows environment, the AS/400 Client Access products have been consolidated into Windows clients and other clients. The ease of rapidly deploying a Windows client that includes native TCP/IP support is enhanced with this pinpoint packaging. Since no one solution can easily accommodate all platforms, communications protocols, or user interfaces, this new product structure is designed to meet your needs.

For customers who have chosen Windows clients for their desktop, the recommendation is to follow the Client Access Family for Windows path. This product family will continue to be enhanced.

For customers who have OS/2, DOS, or Windows 3.1 with RUMBA/400 and limited plans to add new function to the client desktop, they can choose to remain on the Client Access Family path.

Some environments with a mixture of clients will require both families. Each Client Access family includes a client for the Windows 3.1 environment. Both clients deliver many of the same functions, but the Enhanced for Windows 3.1 client contains the latest product enhancements.

The following functions are available only in the Client Access Enhanced for Windows 3.1 client, a member of the Client Access Family for Windows product:
