xSeries 336 related options

The xSeries 336 server features an Intel Xeon processor system that supports internal processing speeds of up to 3.6 GHz and processing operations to memory and the PCI bus at 133 MHz. It contains an integrated, full-speed 2 MB ECC L2 cache. This system supports SMP applications through installation in the second processor slot of xSeries 336 models with like processors.

High-performance server subsystems: These servers are high-throughput, two-way SMP-capable network servers with excellent scalability when you add memory and a second processor. They incorporate powerful 800 MHz Intel Xeon processors with 2 MB advanced transfer L2 cache. Data transfer across the system bus is at a 4X rate (four data transfers per clock) for an effective data transfer rate of 800 MHz (5.3 GB/s). Address transfers across the system bus is at a 2X rate (two addresses per clock) for an effective transfer rate of 400 MHz.

Two Intel Xeon connectors are standard on the system board to support installation of a second processor. High-speed 400 MHz PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM memory is optimized for 800 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem performance.

Additional features

The xSeries 336 subsystems are tuned to provide solid system throughput from processor, to memory, to bus, to disk-intensive I/O. These features combined with SMP capability make this server an excellent choice for:

High-availability and serviceability features: The xSeries 336 server subsystem delivers excellent reliability and serviceability features:

Expandability and growth: The xSeries 336 server contains high levels of function and storage capacity for a 1 U, 19-inch rack-drawer package. It supports customer installation of adapters, processors, memory, and HDD options. Functions (such as SVGA video, Ultra320 SCSI, SATA, and two Gigabit Ethernet controllers) are integrated on the system board. Features include:

Systems management

Integrated BMC: The xSeries 336 includes an integrated baseboard management controller, that provides industry standard Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 1.5 compliant systems management. The BMC comes standard, and shares one of the two onboard Ethernet ports for access. The BMC can be accessed via software compatible with IPMI 1.5 (xCAT, for example). The BMC is implemented using industry leading OSA firmware/applications in conjunction with the integrated baseboard management controller.

In addition you can purchase an optional Remote Supervisor Adapter II SlimLine for additional systems management function.

Optional Remote Supervisor Adapter II SlimLine: The optional RSA II SlimLine adds accelerated graphics and delivers advanced control and monitoring features to manage your IBM eServer xSeries server (select models) at virtually any time, from virtually any place. This daughter card can be added to the server through a connector that connects to the planar or through a riser for select models. This adapter enables easy console redirection with text and graphics, keyboard, and mouse (operating system must support USB) support over the system management LAN connections.

With video compression now built into the adapter hardware, it allows the greater screen sizes and refresh rates standard in the marketplace. This feature allows the user to display server activities from power-on to full operation, remotely with remote user interaction at virtually any time.

The embedded Web server provides remote control from any standard Web browser. No additional software is required on the remote administrator's workstation. For users accustomed to a command line interface, the administrator can also use the provided CLI from a Telnet session to perform some of the functions that they can perform from the Web server. The Remote Supervisor Adapter II SlimLine provides remote management and control of the system independent of the server status, in many cases even if the server is powered off or otherwise disabled.

The RSA II SlimLine features are similar to the RSA II except for the following features:

IBM Director: The xSeries 336 server also features IBM Director, a powerful, highly integrated, systems management software solution built on industry standards and designed for ease of use. Exploit your existing enterprise or workgroup management environments and use rich security to access and manage physically dispersed IT assets more efficiently over the Internet. It can help reduce costs through:

IT administrators can view the hardware configuration of remote systems in detail and monitor the usage and performance of critical components such as processors, HDDs, and memory.

IBM Director includes a portfolio of integrated server tools that work with the Remote Supervisor Adapters or other systems-management monitoring functions. Typical functions and monitoring capabilities can include:

IT administrators have comprehensive, virtual on-site control of xSeries servers with the ability to remotely:

Product positioning

The xSeries 336 server is an ultrathin rack platform. The most powerful 1 U server of the xSeries rack-optimized offerings, it is positioned between the xSeries 306 and the xSeries 346 server. The xSeries 306 also has a 1 U form factor, but supports uniprocessor operations and only fixed Ultra320 SCSI or SATA HDDs. The xSeries 346 server includes more slots and drive bays; however, it requires a 2 U rack space.

High-density, two-way, Xeon-based xSeries 336 and xSeries 346 servers enable customer installation of features. You can prepare for future expansion to meet changing reliability needs. At the same time, the server can handle emerging applications requiring maximum computing power and function in a small amount of rack space. These applications include:

These powerful servers also meet traditional enterprise network server requirements, but with an added benefit of requiring less space.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities

xSeries 336 and related options

The xSeries 336 server and related options are designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with system and options.

Configuration information

Bay configuration

The xSeries 336 server supports either four 2.5-in Ultra320 SCSI hot-swap HDDs, or two 3.5-in Ultra320 SCSI or SATA HDDs. Models that do not have the 2.5-in bays, come with a DVD-ROM. All models are open bay models.

Models shipped with four 2.5-in Ultra320 SCSI hot-swap HDDs do not have a DVD-ROM. In order to install an operating system you will have to either use a network based install or use an external USB DVD or CD-ROM drive.

Models using the DVD-ROM are cabled directly to the IDE port.

Cabling — Standard Non-RAID configurations

xSeries 336 hot-swap models contain a DASD backplane supporting up to four hot-swap, SCA-2-compliant drive bays. The backplane is connected to the internal connector of the integrated Ultra320 SCSI controller through a 16-bit LVD SCSI cable.

Additional cabling alternatives

xSeries 336 non-hot-swap models support two simple-swap SATA HDDS directly to an SATA controller through a two-drop cable.

Rack installations

xSeries 336 1 U rack-drawer models are designed to be installed in a 19-inch rack cabinet designed for 711.1 mm (28 in) deep devices, such as the NetBAY42U ER and NetBAY42U SR. Installation into some of the older Netfinity® racks (9306900, 9306910, 9306200) will require a rack extension kit for proper cable bend radius and cooling.

If an xSeries 336 server is mounted in a non-IBM rack, the rack must satisfy the following specifications:

Processor options

The xSeries 336 server is a Intel Xeon processor system that supports internal processing speeds of up to 3.6 GHz and processing operations to memory and the PCI bus at 133 MHz. It contains an integrated, full-speed 1 MB ECC L2 cache. This system supports SMP applications through installation in the second processor slot of xSeries 336 models with like processors.

Power considerations

The xSeries 336 sever includes a standard 585-watt power supply. This power supply is capable of providing sufficient power to run the server fully configured with supported devices.

Cable orders: The dual 10/100/1000 Mbps, full-duplex, Ethernet PCI controllers, standard with the xSeries 336 server, are connected directly to independent RJ-45 connectors. The RJ-45 connectors provides a 10/100/1000 Base-T interface (either at half- or full-duplex) for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use a UTP cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100 Mbps, or higher, Category 5e, or better, cabling must be used.

There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.

Installability: The xSeries 336 server requires about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional adapters, or features.

Warranty period

Optional IBM features initially installed in an IBM system carry the same warranty period as the system. If installed after the initial system installation, they carry the balance of the system warranty or the optional feature warranty, whichever is greater.

Warranty service: If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the type of warranty service specified below for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically by access to an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.

Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, or HDD) service and on-site service for other selected parts.

CRU service: IBM provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM at any time on your request. CRUs are designated as being either a Tier 1 or a Tier 2 CRU. Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU, at your request, you will be charged for the installation. You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge under the type of warranty service specified below, on-site service.

Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next-business-day delivery. IBM specifies in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU, and you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement.

The following parts have been designated as Tier 1 CRUs: None.

On-site service: IBM on-site repair (IOR), 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday excluding holidays, next-business-day response. IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose. On-site service is not available in all countries, and some countries have kilometer or mileage limitations from an IBM service center. In those locations where on-site service is not available, the normal in-county service delivery is used.

Call IBM at 800-IBM-SERV (426-7378), to assist with problem isolation for hardware to determine if warranty service is required. Telephone support may be subject to additional charges, even during the limited warranty period.

International Warranty service (IWS): IWS is available during the warranty period to customers who travel or relocate to countries where their computer is sold and serviced by IBM or IBM resellers authorized to perform warranty service. Eligible IBM computers are identified by their four-digit machine type.

You can obtain IWS through the method of service, such as CRU, depot, carry-in, or on-site, provided in the servicing country. Service methods and procedures vary by country, and some service or parts may not be available in all countries. Service centers in certain countries may not be able to service all models of a particular machine type. In addition, some countries may have fees and restrictions that apply at the time of service.

To determine the eligibility of your computer and to view a list of countries where service is available, visit

For more information on IWS, refer to Services Announcement 601-034 , dated September 25, 2001.

Note: Due to the earth's magnetic field, CRT monitors are manufactured to work in northern, southern, and equatorial regions of the earth and may not produce a satisfactory image when moved between them. Any required adjustment (if possible) is not covered under IWS and may be subject to a chargeable action. The magnetic field does not affect Flat Panel LCD monitors and ThinkPad® LCD displays.

Licensing: Programs included with this product are licensed under the terms and conditions of the License Agreements that are shipped with the system.
