Refer to Software Announcement 298-369 , dated September 29, 1998, for the original announcement of DITTO/ESA Release 3. OverviewTake advantage of improvements to Library Services in VSE. IBM Data Interfile Transfer, Testing, and Operations Utility for ESA (DITTO/ESA) Release 3 is designed to help you increase the productivity of your system personnel by its added functions, its improved Common User Access® (CUA®) based user interface, plus additional tape support and functions. IBM DITTO/ESA is IBM's best known storage media and data maintenance utility solution for the OS/390® (MVS), VSE, and VM environments. DITTO is a key resource for data processing professionals due to its many versatile functions provided for working with tapes, disks, Volume Table of Contents (VTOCs) and catalogs, Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM) data, VSE library members, sequential data sets and files, MVS Object Access Method (OAM) objects, and card images. DITTO provides a consistent package of functions for the OS/390 (MVS), VSE, and VM user with a common user interface. It supports the respective ESA operating system in an ESA environment to display, duplicate, maintain, repair, and even recover data. DITTO's functions can be used in full-screen mode using its own interactive panel driver, thereby being independent from VSE ICCF or MVS ISPF interactive full-screen environments. DITTO can be used:
DITTO/ESA supports and exploits new features of the OS/390, the VSE/ESA, and the VM/ESA® operating systems, adding new functions and many improvements, based on several customer requirements. DITTO/ESA uses 31-bit addressing. It is enabled for National Language Support and can be translated if requested. This new Release 3 also incorporates maintenance, and supersedes the DITTO/ESA Release 2 product family as well as previous DITTO releases. This letter announces availability of Release 3. Refer to Software Announcement 298-369 , dated September 29, 1998. Key PrerequisitesDITTO/ESA runs on any S/390® Hardware supported by:
Planned Availability DateDescriptionDITTO/ESA Release 3 addresses your need for an easy approach to perform your tasks with a minimum of learning and effort. It supersedes DITTO/ESA Release 2 and incorporates many suggestions and fixes. Additional Tape Support and Functions Tape Label Processing Enhancements Enhanced tape label processing adds ANSI Version 4 label support for more flexibility in processing tapes according to ANSI standards. Standard Label (SL) support for basic tape functions under MVS to resolve customer issues. Support for tape block sizes greater than 32 KB and data set sequence numbers greater than 9999 in tape labels is not available. This Support will be provided only if the functions are supported by the underlying operating system. Enhanced Initialize Tape The INT function now supports scaling of high capacity tape media. A new parameter, SCALE=nn%, lets the user select the desired amount of data to be stored on a tape medium. It could be used, for example, to temporarily reduce medium capacity to gain performance. VSE External Security Manager Support: This support is intended to meet the VSE user requirement for improved security checking using DITTO. More POWER Spool Services and Support for VSE/ESA Environments: A new function, Spool Services (SPS), enables VSE users to work with the VSE POWER spool queues (LST, PUN, RDR, XMT) using DITTO's full-screen interactive user interface. This function lists all entries of the selected queue and allows the user to enter a command directly on an entry to browse, alter, delete, hold, release, and transfer.
Year 2000This product does not have date dependencies and is therefore Year 2000 ready. Product PositioningDITTO/ESA is a general purpose and easy-to-use family of tools for systems and application programmers, as well as for operations support personnel working in ESA environments. Programmers may use it for testing and data handling in both online and batch environments. Operations people may use it in support of their daily data handling tasks on various storage media. Extensive online help information and a CUA interface enable users to use the functions without training or the use of manuals. DITTO/ESA may be used in place of many system utilities with the advantage of a single user interface among S/390 environments.
