IBM® CICS® Transaction Server for z/OS® (CICS TS) has evolved to become the world's most powerful mixed language application server. In support of CICS TS, CICS Performance Analyzer for z/OS (CICS PA) continues to provide the most comprehensive performance reporting, analysis and visualization for CICS performance data. CICS PA V5.4 provides enhanced reporting and analysis of new and existing metrics in CICS TS V5.4.

CICS PA, in conjunction with the other tools in the CICS Tools portfolio, helps to improve operational efficiency and service agility. Development, systems, and operational teams can adopt a collaborative, DevOps approach when building and deploying CICS applications and infrastructure. With CICS TS V5.4 and CICS Tools, it is quicker and easier to build, deploy, and manage powerful mixed language applications.

CICS PA V5.4 delivers the following new set of capabilities:

  • New transaction tracking reports for the new ASYNC API in CICS TS V5.4
  • New CICS PA CPU and response time intensity derived fields
  • New support for ORDER option in statistics summary report
  • Ability to create extracts by using statistics summary forms and statistics list forms
  • Ability to export statistics data from multiple CICS TS and CICS Transaction Gateway (CICS TG) releases into the same IBM DB2® table
  • Symbolic variable representing week for cyclic data sets
  • Enhancements to sample report sets
  • Ability to convert CICS statistics domain subpools records, in a pre-V530 historical database (HDB), to the correct format
  • Additions and enhancements to CICS PA documentation

The new features of CICS PA V5.4 help clients to realize the benefits of modernizing CICS applications to use new CICS TS capabilities, such as the ASYNC API. Many other enhancements in CICS PA V5.4 offer increased value to clients with earlier releases of CICS TS.

Description
Bottom rule

CICS PA enables historical performance reporting and analysis of CICS systems and applications, identification of performance problems from large volumes of System Management Facility (SMF) data, trend analysis, and capacity planning.

In CICS PA V5.4, these capabilities are enhanced to enable detailed performance reporting, analysis and comparison as CICS applications are modernized to use the new ASYNC API in CICS TS V5.4.

CICS TS V5.4 provides a set of new asynchronous API commands to make it easier for application developers to create an asynchronous programming model that can run child tasks asynchronously. As part of this new function, CICS TS introduces new monitoring and statistics metrics. Using CICS PA V5.4, application and systems programmers can measure and analyze the performance of CICS applications and systems that exploit the new CICS TS ASYNC API. CICS PA V5.4 provides new forms that include the new monitoring and statistics fields to enable reports to be generated as part of implementation of ASYNC API applications.

New, summary form intensity derived fields provide CICS systems programmers, performance specialists, and application developers with metrics to measure the overall performance of a group of transactions. These CPU and response time metrics are calculated by multiplying the total CPU or response time by the total number of transactions in the group. This measure is useful in comparing the relative intensity of various groups of transactions to determine which would most benefit from tuning, which consume the most CPU or have the highest response times.

Performance and statistics extracts provide a means of extracting CICS PA-formatted data into a file for import into PC spreadsheet tools or databases. The data can then be used for further analysis and visualization, by using tables and charts. Many CICS TS systems and performance programmers need to provide CICS TS and CICS TG statistics for users who do not have access to z/OS. They need an easy way to create a CSV file of statistics summary and list reports, containing CICS TS and CICS TG data. CICS PA V5.3 introduced form-based statistics list and statistics summary reporting. APAR PI64606 for CICS PA V5.3 and CICS PA V5.4 extends this functionality to enable users to create extracts using a form. The statistics form-based extract provides equivalent functionality to the performance-form-based extract.

Support for ORDER option on STATISTICS summary reports allows CICS performance specialists to order the statistics summary report output by any selected statistics field, in either ascending or descending order. For example, for easier analysis the user may want to view the statistics summary report ordered to list the CICS APPLIDs by descending number of "Total Number of Transactions". For easier analysis of File statistics, the user may want to view the summary report by ascending "Total Storage Allocated". This function is equivalent to the Order option that is available in the performance summary report.

Before CICS PA V5.3 APAR PI64606 and CICS PA V5.4, CICS PA users could not load certain CICS TS and CICS TG statistics records from multiple releases into DB2, because of changes to the fields defined in the records. The DB2 table load would fail because the CICS PA-generated DB2 LOAD command was based on the CICS release specified in the dialog. When processing records from multiple releases of CICS, the generated fields in the LOAD command might not match some releases, causing the DB2 load to fail. To overcome this limitation, this enhancement allows CICS TS systems and performance programmers to specify multiple CICS releases for both CICS TS and CICS TG. When they do this, CICS PA will generate multiple DB2 LOAD commands, one for each of the specified releases.

To match the HDB record with the LOAD command, CICS PA appends a release identifier to the STID that is specified in the LOAD command's WHEN clause. This ensures that the appropriate LOAD command, with the correct list of fields, is used to load each HDB record into the DB2 table. Typically, the DB2 table definition is based on a specific CICS release, where some record fields might not exist in the table. These missing record fields would normally cause the DB2 load to fail. To ensure that DB2 does not fail, CICS PA also generates the IGNOREFIELDS YES operand, which allows the DB2 load to continue even when fields specified in the LOAD command are not defined in the DB2 table.

CICS PA V5.3 APAR PI64606 and CICS PA V5.4 enable the use of symbolic variable week for cyclic SMF dataset names. Some client sites include a relative week number for weekly SMF datasets. For example, CICSPROD.Y16W09 denotes 16 as year 2016 and 09 as the week of that year. Using symbolics, the cyclic dataset name is defined as CICSPROD.Y&YY..W&WW.SMF.

CICS PA V5.3 APAR PI64606 and CICS PA V5.4 includes improvements to sample report sets. These sets were first provided in CICS PA V5.3. This enhancement augments the samples with the addition of new reports to the THRDSAFE report set. This report set can be used to analyze the performance of threadsafe transactions and to identify transactions that would benefit from being made threadsafe. The VIRTSTG and STGOVRV statistics forms are used in several sample report sets. This enhancement modifies the previous versions of these two statistics forms to refine their content and improve their focus in order to report the most relevant statistics. Clients can further customize any of the forms provided in the sample report sets, to report the statistics they require.

Releases of CICS PA prior to V5.3 loaded Domain Subpools statistics record field Initial Free Area with an incorrect length into the HDB. CICS PA V5.3 corrected this problem, causing records loaded into the HDB prior to V5.3 to report incorrect values. CICS TS V5.3 APAR PI64606 and CICS PA V5.4 provides a new HDB command that converts records loaded with the incorrect length to the correct format. This ensures that all the fields in the Domain Subpools are reported correctly by CICS PA.

The CICS PA User Guide shows a simple example of each report in the report set samples, including a description and the most important columns. The PLUGIN topic is useful when users want to export data from CICS PA to DB2 so you can view the data using the CICS PA plug-in to the CICS Explorer®.

The CICS Optimization Solution Pack for z/OS is not updated to Version 5.4. However, CICS Optimization Solution Pack for z/OS V5.3 is available.

Value Unit-based pricing

Value Unit pricing for eligible IBM z Systems™ IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) programs enables a lower cost of incremental growth and enterprise aggregation. Each z Systems™ IPLA product with Value Unit pricing has a single price per Value Unit and a conversion matrix, called Value Unit Exhibit, for converting from some designated measurement to Value Units. Most commonly, Millions of Service Units (MSUs) is the measurement designated by IBM to be converted to Value Units. Some other measurements are engines or messages. Since MSUs are the most common measurement, that measurement will be used for the remainder of this description.

Value Unit pricing offers price benefits for you. For each z Systems IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the required license capacity. Each of the various Value Unit Exhibits stipulate that the larger your required license capacity, the fewer Value Units per MSU you will need. Value Unit Exhibits are uniquely identified by a three digit code and referred to using the nomenclature VUExxx, where xxx is the three digit code.

Subsequent acquisitions of Value Unit priced programs offer additional price benefits. The quantity of each z Systems IPLA program that you have acquired is referred to as entitled license capacity. If you wish to grow your entitled license capacity for a z Systems IPLA program, the calculation to determine additional needed Value Units is based upon the number of Value Units already acquired.

For each z Systems IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, you should:

  • Determine the required license capacity, in MSUs.
  • Aggregate the MSUs across the enterprise.
  • Convert the total MSUs to Value Units, using the applicable Value Unit Exhibit.
  • Multiply the price per Value Unit by the total number of Value Units to determine the total cost.

To simplify conversion from the designated measurement to Value Units or vice-versa, use the Value Unit Converter Tool. For additional information or to obtain a copy of the Value Unit Converter Tool, visit the Value Unit Converter Tool, go to the IBM System z® Software Pricing website.

Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.

To determine the required license capacity for the z Systems IPLA program you selected, refer to the Terms and conditions section.

Sub-capacity mainframes

In cases where sub-capacity is applicable, the following terms apply.

Execution-based: The required capacity of a z Systems IPLA sub-capacity program with these terms equals the capacity of the LPARs where the z Systems IPLA program executes.

z/OS-based: The required license capacity of a z Systems IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of z/OS on the machines where the z Systems IPLA program executes.

Reference-based: The required license capacity of a z Systems IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable monthly license charge (MLC) program. This MLC program is called the parent program.

Full-machine-based: The required license capacity of a z Systems IPLA program with full machine-based terms equals the MSU-rated capacity of the machines where the z Systems IPLA program executes.

For more information on mainframe MSU-rated capacities, refer to The IBM z Systems Machines Exhibit, (Z125-3901), or visit the Mainframes section of the z Systems Exhibits website

For additional information for products with reference-based terms, z Systems IPLA sub-capacity programs with reference-based terms adds value to the parent program across the environment, regardless of where in the environment the z Systems IPLA program executes.

An environment is defined as either a single or stand-alone machine or a qualified Parallel Sysplex®. You may have one or more different environments across the enterprise. To determine the required license capacity for each z Systems IPLA program with referenced-based terms, each environment should be assessed separately.

When a z Systems IPLA sub-capacity program with reference-based terms is used in a qualified Parallel Sysplex environment, the required license capacity of the z Systems IPLA program must equal with the license capacity of the parent program across the Parallel Sysplex. Qualified Parallel Sysplex refers to one where MLC pricing is aggregated across the sysplex.

Sub-capacity eligibility

To be eligible for sub-capacity charging on select z Systems IPLA programs, the client must first implement and comply with all terms of either sub-capacity Workload License Charges (WLC) or sub-capacity Entry Workload License Charges (EWLC). To implement sub-capacity WLC or EWLC, a machine must be z Systems (or equivalent). On that machine:

  • All instances of the OS/390® operating system must be upgraded to the z/OS operating systems.
  • Any licenses for the OS/390 operating system must be discontinued.
  • All instances of the z/OS operating systems must be running in z/Architecture® (64-bit) mode.

For that machine, the client must create and submit a Sub-Capacity Report to IBM each month. Sub-Capacity Reports must be generated using the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT). For additional information or to obtain a copy of SCRT, visit the z Systems Software Pricing website.

Client must comply with all of the terms of the WLC or EWLC offering, whichever is applicable:

  • The complete terms and conditions of sub-capacity WLC are defined in the IBM Customer Agreement - Attachment for z Systems Workload License Charges (Z125-6516).
  • The complete terms and conditions for sub-capacity EWLC are defined in the IBM Customer Agreement - Attachment for IBM z Systems 890 and 800 License Charges (Z125-6587).

Additionally, client must sign and comply with the terms and conditions specified in the amendment to the IPLA contract - Amendment for IBM z Systems z9® and z Systems Programs Sub-Capacity Pricing (Z125-6929). Once the amendment is signed, the terms in the amendment replace any and all previous z Systems IPLA sub-capacity terms and conditions.

Sub-capacity utilization determination

Sub-capacity utilization is determined based on the utilization of a sub-capacity eligible reference product and machine.

On/Off CoD

To be eligible for On/Off CoD pricing, you must be enabled for temporary capacity on the corresponding hardware, and the required contract, Attachment for IBM z Systems On/Off Capacity on Demand (Z125-7883) must be signed prior to use.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
