Overview
Bottom rule

BigFix delivers endpoint lifecycle and security management using a unified, lightweight, extensible infrastructure. This solution enables organizations to proactively manage their servers, desktops, and laptops. BigFix provides a clear path for improving control and compliance with clear, accurate reporting, and easy integration with systems such as ticketing and change management databases.

Enhancements

  • BigFix V9.5 is now fully Unicode enabled and removes the need to set standard English code page for all systems when managing IT environments, which are located in various countries or geographical locations.
  • The IBM BigFix Compliance PCI Add-on provides reporting and compliance services to help ensure that your endpoints meet the technical and organizational requirements that are related to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
  • BigFix V9.5 provides a web user interface, an additional component of the BigFix platform, and is designed to harness the flexibility and power of BigFix. The interface is presented in an approachable format so that operators with little or no knowledge of BigFix can easily use it.
  • The web user interface augments the traditional BigFix Console but does not replace it.

Additional enhancements to the BigFix products are part of this update.

BigFix platform

BigFix V9.5 enhancements

The new web user interface is powered with a notification service, which sends an automated email when a deployment fails or completes, and provides the following set of features to support the daily tasks of BigFix operators:

  • Overview: This task lets you get high level summarized information status about your environment; move quickly to common tasks and areas that need attention.
  • Device List: View your devices and deploy content to them.
  • Deployment List: See all actions taken in your environment.
  • Patches: View and deploy Microsoft Windows, Red Hat, Mac OS X patches.
  • Software Packages: View and deploy software packages; create software packages.
  • Custom Content: View and deploy custom content.

IBM BigFix Patch

BigFix Patch optimizes the patch process by integration with native patch management tools provided by supported operating system vendors. Enhancements help simplify and automate the patch management process:

  • The IBM AIX download cacher and AIX download plug-in are updated to utilize the Electronic Customer Care (ECC) services to automatically retrieve, download, and cache AIX Technology Levels, Service Packs, or Concluding Service Packs to facilitate deployment of AIX Fixlet®. ECC replaces Fixlet to provide a centralized access point to access code updates for IBM systems. Filesets are downloaded and cached directly in the BigFix server, allowing them to be reused for later deployment.
  • Added patch content for Debian 7 and Sun Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU).
  • Added the following content for Microsoft Office 365 patch management:
    • Analysis to tell which endpoints do not have Microsoft Office 365 patch
    • Fixlets to turn Microsoft Office 365 auto update on and off
    • Fixlet to update the custom repository or location with the monthly patch build
    • Fixlet to batch configure Microsoft Office 365 to gather updates and packages from custom repository
    • Fixlet to gather and apply a patch to Microsoft Office 365 from a custom repository rather than from Microsoft Cloud Service

IBM BigFix Lifecycle

BigFix Lifecyle delivers comprehensive and powerful solutions for IT operations.

OS Deployment and bare metal imaging enhancements:

  • Added support for Microsoft Windows 10 operating system for capturing, imaging, and bare metal deployments.
  • Updated bare metal server component to use OpenSSL version 1.0.2d.

Software distribution enhancement:

  • Ability to specify a file's url. With the file url, you can choose to either download it immediately or download it during Fixlet runtime.

The server automation capability, now part of BigFix Lifecycle, includes automation that saves time and improves operational efficiency.

A new Notification Service for the Server Automation component is now available within the BigFix Console. You can configure Server Automation to send notification emails on the execution status of your automation plans.

Automation plan management and execution improvement:

  • Several new sample plans are added to help you get up and running quickly when adding a new availability task.

Automation task improvements:

  • The server automation advanced patch management solution enhancements include content for fix packs and interim fixes (iFix) for IBM WebSphere® Application Server V8.0, V8.5, and V8.5.5.
  • The Server Automation cluster patching solutions on Microsoft Windows are expanded to enable automated patching of WebSphere Application Server clusters (middleware and operating system) for WebSphere Application Server V8.0, V8.5, and V8.5.5.
  • The Microsoft Exchange cluster patching solution is enhanced to ensure that services are running after patching. If you have a File Share Witness configured, you can check if the File Share Witness is accessible from the target computers during the patching process.

IBM BigFix Compliance

BigFix Compliance delivers security configuration checklists that align with the most up-to-date industry and government benchmarks such as provided by the Center for Internet Security (CIS), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).

A new chargeable component, IBM BigFix Compliance PCI Add-on, delivers security configuration checklists that are based on the guidance provided by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

Each PCI DSS checklist contains technical checks that are based on the PCI standard (PCI DSS Requirements and Security Assessment Procedures v3.0 and PCI DSS Requirements and Security Assessment Procedures v3.1), that assess security policies and configurations on each endpoint, provides remediation steps to fix vulnerabilities, and provides reporting capabilities.

BigFix Compliance PCI Add-on comes with a set of Fixlets and analysis. Fixlets or checks correspond to a specific configuration setting in accordance with the PCI DSS requirements. A Fixlet evaluates a system setting against a specific policy value and displays the compliance state of an endpoint. Each Fixlet in the PCI DSS checklist has an associated analysis that retrieves the actual state of each configuration item on an endpoint.

The compliance status of each PCI DSS check and checklist is calculated by the BigFix Compliance base module.

Checklist name Supported operating systems and servers
PCI DSS Checklist for MS IIS Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)
PCI DSS Checklist for MS SQL Server 2008 Microsoft SQL Server 2008
PCI DSS Checklist for MS SQL Server 2012 Microsoft SQL Server 2012
PCI DSS Checklist for Windows 7 Microsoft Windows 7
PCI DSS Checklist for Windows 2008 Microsoft Windows 2008 Microsoft Windows 2008 R2
PCI DSS Checklist for Windows 2012 Microsoft Windows 2012 Microsoft Windows 2012 R2
PCI DSS Checklist for Windows Embedded POSReady 7 Microsoft Windows Embedded POSReady 7
PCI DSS Checklist for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 Microsoft Windows Embedded POSReady 2009
PCI DSS Checklist for Windows Embedded Standard 7 Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7
PCI DSS Checklist for RHEL 5 Red Hat Enterprise Linux™ 5
PCI DSS Checklist for RHEL 6 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
PCI DSS Checklist for RHEL 7 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7

Note: Most of the check Fixlets in these checklists have a parameterized setting to enable customization for compliance evaluation.

The check Fixlets do not contain actions for remediation except those for Microsoft Windows 2008 and Microsoft Windows 2012, which allow console operators to resolve a vulnerability issue with a single action. A remediation action can only be taken on an endpoint where the Fixlet is relevant. For those Fixlets that do not provide a remediation action, each check includes steps that you can follow to remediate the non compliant endpoints.

IBM BigFix Protection

BigFix Core Protection delivers near real-time protection from malware and other malicious threats through file and web reputation, personal firewall, behavior monitoring, and more.

Improvements:

  • Added support for Mac OS X 10.11

IBM BigFix Inventory

BigFix Inventory provides the foundation for holistic software asset management by discovering all licensed and unlicensed software with in-depth granularity across all devices.

Enhancements:

  • A single install of BigFix Inventory server can now be used to manage the entire worldwide client deployment and provide IBM capacity reports by region in compliance with the defined IBM sub-capacity licensing regions.
  • Multitenancy is improved to allow the proper grouping of computers so you can easily generate reports per organizational business units.
  • Multitenancy is improved to allow Managed Service Providers and organizations to use BigFix Inventory to provide reports per client as well as aggregation and reporting for IBM (including IBM sub-capacity) and non-IBM products per business unit or division type.
  • BigFix Inventory web user interface is enhanced so you can add and manage extended software signatures, which removes the need of using legacy Software Knowledge Base Toolkit component.
  • Hardware information, such as processor details, can now be aggregated on the Computers, Software Installations, and Oracle Databases reports. The combination of software and hardware information on a single report facilitates the calculation of processor-based and core-based licenses for any software product.
  • New REST APIs can retrieve raw scan results and improve the monitoring of your environment by quickly discovering software that was installed or modified recently.
  • New support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 x86 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 for Power Systems™ (Big Endian).

Client Device

Client Device is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A Client Device is a single-user computing device or special-purpose sensor or telemetry device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from or provides data to another computer system that is typically referred to as a server or is otherwise managed by the server. Multiple Client Devices may share access to a common server. A Client Device may have some processing capability or be programmable to allow a user to do work. Examples include, but are not limited to, actuators, appliances, automated teller machines, automatic meter readers, cash registers, disk drives, desktop computers, kiosks, notebook computers, personal digital assistants, point-of-sale terminals, sensors, smart meters, tape drives, and technical workstations. Licensee must obtain entitlements for every Client Device that runs, provides data to, uses services provided by, or otherwise accesses the program and for every other computer or server on which the program is installed.

Resource Value Unit (RVU)

RVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. RVU Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) are based on the number of units of a specific resource used or managed by the program. Licensee must obtain sufficient entitlements for the number of RVUs required for licensee's environment for the specific resources as specified in the program specific table. RVU entitlements are specific to the program and the type of resource and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with RVU entitlements of another program or resource. Refer to the program specific RVU table.

Notes:

  • Some programs may require licenses for the resources available to and the resources being managed by the program. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the resources used by the program directly, licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the resources managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the resources used by the program directly, licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the resources managed by the program.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others.
