Overview

IBM Systems Director Editions are designed to reduce operational complexity, improve the efficiency of IT staff and systems, and control costs while meeting business requirements for service delivery.

IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition features enable automated resource provisioning and balancing required for a dynamic infrastructure. Enterprise Edition also provides enterprise management tools for advanced troubleshooting, capacity analysis, and reporting.

Effective April 26, 2013, Systems Director Enterprise Edition is being updated to add IBM Systems Director Storage Control, enabling integrated physical and virtual infrastructure management of IBM and select non-IBM storage systems and select Fibre Channel switches.

Also with this update to Systems Director Enterprise Edition, Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM) and IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management (ITMfEM) will no longer be components of the bundled offering. Clients that purchased Systems Director Enterprise Edition with TADDM and ITMfEM prior to this update will continue to be supported by maintaining their Software Maintenance contract.

Description

IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition is being updated to add IBM Systems Director Storage Control, enabling integrated physical and virtual infrastructure management of IBM and select non-IBM storage systems and select Fibre Channel switches. Also with this update to Systems Director Enterprise Edition, Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM) and IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management (ITMfEM) will no longer be components of the bundled offering.

IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition makes it easier for clients to manage integrated server and storage management and also enables advanced functionality for integrated provisioning of storage at time of virtual image deployment, creation of storage system pools, and easy storage to server provisioning. It also enables a single user interface for managing both server and storage and providing the basic lifecycle management of discovery, inventory, health and status, topology views, and capacity view and status.

IBM Systems Director Storage Control is an IBM Systems Director plug-in based on IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center. It integrates tightly with the IBM Systems Director and VMControl environment, providing integrated physical and virtual server and storage management through a single user interface. Storage Control unifies the management of physical and virtual server and storage resources for integrated end-to-end lifecycle management, including configuration, discovery, health, capacity, inventory, provisioning, topology, updates, and alerts. Storage Control is especially important for IT administration groups that have responsibility across servers and storage.

IBM Systems Director Storage Control provides management simplification of storage resources within the data center with a single management console for managing both server and storage systems. Storage Control leverages the Systems Director common tool set and user interface for simpler, more efficient management of multiple server platforms, networking devices, and storage.

Storage Control functionality includes:

• Storage device discovery and coverage in integrated physical and logical topology views.
• Health status and alerting
• Capacity status
• Simple point-and-click zoning and provisioning of storage to servers
• Integrated provisioning management
• Command-line interface for device discovery
• Show relationships between storage and server resources
• Ability to configure logical and physical configuration
• Ability to view controller and volume status and to set notification alerts
• Single management server deployment
• Smart storage allocation for quick creation of storage volumes
• Smart zoning for easy storage fabric provisioning

Integration with IBM Systems Director VMControl™ , also included in IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition, includes the following additional functions:

• Storage provisioning for image creation, deployment, and cloning
• Integrated virtualization management across server, storage, and network
• Integrated management of storage in lifecycle of defining and managing system pools
• Policy-based storage placement, provisioning, and cloning actions within the pool
• Integrate NIPV support when used with IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) or Storwize® Storage ( PowerVM® only)
• Lightning-fast virtual image cloning support when used with FlashCopy® services of SVC or Storwize based storage

With this update to Systems Director Enterprise Edition, Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM) and IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management (ITMfEM) will no longer be components of the bundled offering. Effective April 26, 2013, Systems Director Enterprise Editions entitlements will not include additional entitlements for ITM for Energy Management and TADDM from IBM Power Systems . Clients that purchased Systems Director Enterprise Edition with TADDM and ITMfEM prior to this update will continue to be supported by maintaining their Software Maintenance contract.
