Description
Bottom rule

IBM WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition V8.5 supports the deployment of WebSphere Application Server virtual images into VMware ESX environments.

WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition V8.5 is a combination of WebSphere Application Server and the supported operating systems, optimized for appropriate environments. It can take the form of a single application server, a member of a cluster of application servers, or an IBM HTTP server instance.

By deploying and running WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition in virtualized environments, you can better utilize hardware, which can ultimately reduce hardware, power, cooling, and real estate costs. Increased hardware utilization results from virtualization, allowing a single machine to be partitioned into multiple smaller virtual machines, each of which can run an instance of WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition.

Fast, flexible, and simplified

WebSphere Application Server V8.5 delivers breakthrough new options for application development and smaller simpler production server deployments. Developers gain a significant advantage with WebSphere Application Server profiles tailored specifically to the developer experience as well as enablement of a broad range of industry-standard tooling options.

New Liberty profile: a lightweight application foundation

WebSphere Application Server includes the Liberty profile which is optimized for developer productivity and web application deployment. Its incredibly fast restart time, small size, and ease of use makes the Liberty profile a viable option for developers building applications that do not require the full Java EE environment of traditional enterprise application server profiles.

The Liberty profile

Liberty profile provides a simplified and lightweight development and application-serving environment for web, OSGi, and mobile applications. Key benefits include, but are not limited to, the following capabilities:

Enterprise JavaBeans™ (EJB) support in OSGi applications

Take advantage of enhanced modular application development by assembling OSGi applications from reusable bundles that contain EJB assets. The enterprise beans in your OSGi bundles can be developed from scratch, or you can include existing EJB assets and migrate them to use OSGi modularity with minimal code changes. Stateful, stateless, and singleton enterprise beans are supported.

Your OSGi application can also contain message-driven beans. You deploy and configure an OSGi application that contains EJBs in a similar way to deploying and configuring a Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) enterprise application, by using wsadmin or the administrative console.

Web 2.0 and Mobile Toolkit

The previous Feature Pack is now included within the core WebSphere Application Server product. This toolkit provides developers with ready-to-use components to extend service-oriented architecture (SOA) by connecting web services, SOA services, and Java EE objects into interactive desktop-web and mobile web user interfaces. With this toolkit applications developed initially for desktop browsers can now be adapted and deployed to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Intelligent Management and enhanced resiliency

Intelligent Management capabilities extend the traditional application server with new technologies to enhance resiliency and virtualization capabilities and availability. New Intelligent Management capabilities deliver application availability, elasticity, and qualities of services programmatically instrumented and executed to ensure the highest possible levels of end-user availability. Autonomic capabilities are provided to sense and respond to problems within the application server and autocorrect or route around these problems before end users experience an outage. Additional resiliency capabilities help to drive down total cost of ownership while improving overall qualities of service. Previously, these enhanced resiliency capabilities were available separately by using Intelligent Management Pack but are now contained within WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition V8.5.

Highlights include:

Improved operations, security, and control

WebSphere Application Server V8.5 provides new and improved capabilities with support for IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition V7.0. IBM Software Development Kit (SDK) provides a full-function SDK for Java that is compliant with the Oracle Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) 7 application programming interfaces (APIs). With IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition V7.0, you can develop and deploy Java applications at the Java 7 API level and continue the "write once, run anywhere" Java paradigm at the Java API level. The SDK contains the Java application Runtime Environment and other tools that enable developers to create Java applications.

WebSphere Application Server supports IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition V7.0 as a pluggable JDK. Java 6 EE is installed with the product and used by default. You can optionally install and enable Java 7 support.

WebSphere Batch enhancements

WebSphere Batch offers an enterprise-level managed batch execution environment that enables the entry, execution, and management of Java batch processing. It provides an infrastructure for batch processing to allow sharing of business logic with online transaction processing (OLTP) applications. This helps to lower cost by reducing risk and management effort, supplies an "always-on" business experience by eliminating offline batch windows, and delivers enterprise qualities of service required by mission-critical batch applications. Batch jobs and online transaction processing can execute concurrently. Previously, these enhanced WebSphere Batch capabilities were available separately by using WebSphere Compute Grid. They are now included within the WebSphere Application Server itself.

Entitlement for Network Deployment

WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition also includes the entitlement for the IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment offering, providing flexibility in the adoption of virtual environments. This includes authorization to use any combination of the WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition and WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment programs up to the level of use specified in your proof of entitlement for WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition. When using WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment, you must have a separate license and support entitlement for the operating system. The operating system included in the WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition offering is restricted to support of that program.

Flexible deployment options

Flexible deployment options for the IBM HTTP Server component of WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition are available with the IBM HTTP Server for WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition. This offering entitles you to deploy the IBM HTTP Server and the underlying operating system on a stand-alone node without having to purchase a full WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition license.

IBM HTTP Server for WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition is an entitlement-only offering. The IBM HTTP Server code is included in the WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition.

WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition V8.5 and IBM HTTP Server for WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition V8.5 are available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server on x86 operating systems.

Note: In scenarios where the IBM HTTP Server component is deployed on the same node with WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition, a separate IBM HTTP Server for WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition license is not needed nor useful. This usage is covered by the entitlement to WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition. A separate license for IBM HTTP Server is beneficial only when IBM HTTP Server and its supporting operating system are deployed on a node separate from WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition and would otherwise require a full WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition entitlement. In both deployment scenarios, the IBM HTTP Server component may be used only in support of WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition.

For more information on WebSphere Application Server V8.5, refer to Software Announcement 212-109, dated April 24, 2012.

IBM Workload Deployer appliance is a cloud computing appliance that manages WebSphere products in a cloud environment. It dispenses patterns of virtual images into a pool of virtualized resources running a supported hypervisor. The optimization for deployment speed and agility enables an entirely new usage paradigm for WebSphere Application Server built around rapid setup and teardown. Test cases can be based upon a standardized deployment that is destroyed and reinstalled after each execution. For more information about IBM Workload Deployer, refer to Hardware Announcement 111-202, dated October 04, 2011 and Software Announcement 212-171, dated April 11, 2012.

IBM PureApplication System W1500 (PureApplication System) is an expert integrated system. It combines the flexibility of a general-purpose system and the simplicity of an appliance. Integrated expertise throughout the system fundamentally changes the economics of IT. The PureApplication System comes integrated from the IBM factory, architected by IBM experts. WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition is optimized for IBM PureApplication System, and is delivered as an integrated pattern inside IBM PureApplication System. For more information about IBM PureApplication System, refer to Software Announcement 212-117, dated April 11, 2012.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program, except for those servers from which the Program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html

* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
