Description

What's new in Content Manager OnDemand for Multiplatforms V8.4

  • Web-based system administration client

The Web-based system administration client enables a subset of many common functions to be performed via a Web-based browser client. This client allows you to add, view, update, and delete users, groups, applications, application groups, folders, printers, and storage sets.

Supported under Internet Explorer 6.0.1, Internet Explorer 7.0, or Mozilla Firefox 2.0, this client allows greater administration capabilities in a decentralized environment, reducing the need for a large workstation footprint and extended OnDemand administration skills in user departments.

  • Exploitation of 64-bit enabled space on Linux, AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris platforms, leading to increased performance

  • Native Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) support on the Content Manager OnDemand server

The LDAP is an open industry standard that has evolved to share information between distributed applications on the same network, organize information clearly and consistently, and prevent unauthorized modification or disclosure of private information. In recent years, LDAP has gained wide acceptance as the directory access method of the Internet, and becomes strategic within corporate intranets. Starting with V8.4, you can use LDAP to manage basic login authentication directly on the server.

  • Cabinet support

Cabinet support allows users to organize folders into electronic cabinets, simplifying navigation through the folder structure. A cabinet can contain any number of folders and a folder can belong to none, one, or more cabinets. This function is exposed through the administration clients and the Windows™ client. The following operations are available through the cabinet view: Add, Update, Delete, Copy, Export, Summarize, Properties, Find, and Explore.

  • Global annotations

Content Manager OnDemand now allows you to decide whether public, private, and group annotations can be created at the system level. If you have the correct permission, you can also determine which type of annotation to use as the default.

  • Additional usability enhancements:
    • Multi-character predictive search
    • Export to file
    • User-specified separator for Copy to Clipboard
    • Filename indexing

  • Event-based expiration for data in Tivoli® Storage Manager

In Content Manager OnDemand, the data retention protection (DRP) protocol prevents Tivoli Storage Manager from explicitly deleting data but allows it to expire data. V8.4 introduces a new expiration type, event-based expiration. Under the event-based expiration, Tivoli Storage Manager holds items forever until an event activates the creation-based expiration parameters. After the expiration parameters are activated, they determine how long an object exists until Tivoli Storage Manager deletes the object.

  • Ability to change the life of cached data retroactively

Before V8.4, when you changed the cache data value in the administrative client, the change affected data subsequently loaded, and not data that is already in the cache. Starting with V8.4, the cache data value setting expires all data for the application after the indicated number of days regardless of when the data is loaded.

  • Server-based sorting

In V8.4, Content Manager OnDemand allows you to sort the document hit lists on the server before the document hit lists are returned to the Content Manager OnDemand client. You can specify server-based sorting in the Folder permissions options window in the administrative client.

  • Enhancements to system log utility

  • Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) compliant

Content Manager OnDemand V8.4 is IPv6 compliant. IPv6 is the next version of the network protocols that are used across the Internet. IPv6 provides greater network deployment flexibility, a much expanded address space, authentication, and privacy. Many countries are moving quickly to deploy IPv6. The U.S. Federal Government has mandated the procurement of IPv6-enabled products and is working toward a transition to IPv6 between 2008 and 2010.

Also shipping with Content Manager OnDemand for Multiplatforms V8.4

Available to Content Manger OnDemand customers beginning in December 2006, the IBM Web Interface for Content Management allows users to access documents from the IBM Content Manager OnDemand repository with any supported Web browser. It is designed as an out-of-the-box, easy-to-use, highly interactive Web Client that employs open standards and supports Web 2.0 and AJAX technologies. It is well suited for both local and remote users who are familiar with the point-and-click capabilities of a Web interface.

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

IBM Content Manager OnDemand for Multiplatforms is capable as of August 30, 2007, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), containing details on the products accessibility compliance, can be requested at

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Charge metrics definitions

Value Unit

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

Processor (Value Unit)

A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the Value Unit table on the following Web site

With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of Value Units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Authorized user

An authorized user is one and only one individual (named or unnamed) within or outside your enterprise. A PoE must be obtained for each individual user accessing the program in any manner. A program licensed under an authorized user PoE may be installed on a single computer or server, and accessed by multiple users, provided that a PoE has been obtained for each individual user accessing the program either directly or indirectly (via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means on behalf of the user.
